News 🗞️
🏆 Catch of the day: One of Nottingham’s most famous eateries has to be The Cod’s Scallops, which has been named by both Time Out London and The Guardian as one of the best chippies in the UK this year. Last Friday it gained even more claim, with its Wilford Lane branch being in the top 10 for The National Fish and Chip Awards’ restaurant of the year. The winner will be crowned in February 2025 — fingers crossed for the team! instagram.com
🤝 History in the making: Over £250k has been raised to begin the casting of the life-sized bronze sculpture Standing in This Place, which is set to be installed in the Green Heart by early 2025. The piece will be crafted by Ilkeston-based sculptor Rachel Carter and will depict two women in period costume — an enslaved woman working in the American cotton fields and a white woman working in the East Midlands’ textile mills. Rachel said, “This sculpture will give voice and recognition to the contributions of thousands of unnamed women.” westbridgfordwire.com
🪔 It’s a celebration: We’ve got you covered with this week’s events down below, but if you’re looking forward to next week already, Nottingham Castle’s Diwali ‘Jam’ in the Castle is worth having on your radar. During this, Nottingham Trent University students will be showcasing contemporary music and dance, capturing the essence of Diwali’s rich musical heritage. Standard admission tickets of £15pp will be sold at the door, which will also grant you year-round access to the Castle. nottinghamcastle.org.uk
⚽ Scores on the doors: Nottingham Forest had a fine week in the Premier League, picking up a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace at home and 3-1 away at Leicester. The Reds sit in a lofty 7th in the league. League One’s Mansfield Town also had a good week, winning at Wigan and drawing with high-spending Birmingham City. The newly promoted Stags are now 4th. Meanwhile in League Two, Notts County drew against Barrow away (1-1) and beat Harrogate at home (1-0).
🏒 Remember me: British Ice Hockey came together to mark the one-year anniversary of the death of Adam Johnson, with teams holding a 47 second applause at the face-off. The Panthers marked this at home on Sunday. They played against Manchester Storm, losing 1-3.
