Notts Going On — Goose Fair and Newark’s winning athlete
Autumnal treats, a Carlton home with a view, film and sport news, and more...
Hello and welcome to Notts Going On — your weekly guide with events, property, news, and more.
I’m starting to get quite nervous as I’m running the Robin Hood Half Marathon this Sunday! My foot has been a little sore, so I’m keeping my fingers and toes (okay, maybe not the latter) crossed it will be fine. If you’d like to donate, you can do so on JustGiving. I’m fundraising for Emmanuel House, which is a homelessness charity in the city.

Nature Spotting: Autumn Colours 🍂
When: September 24
Where: Attenborough Nature Reserve
How much: Free entry
Attenborough Nature Reserve is one of the best beauty spots in Notts, and it changes wonderfully between the seasons. You can explore and enjoy its autumn colour during this nature walk, where you’ll identify trees, leaves, and plants in vibrant shades. The walk starts promptly at 10am, so arrive by 9.45am to get parked beforehand. It will start by the Nature Centre, so you can grab a coffee before heading out.

Legally Blonde: The Musical 🎭
When: September 24-27
Where: Nottingham Arts Theatre
How much: £18-£20.50pp
Fabulous and fun, this infectious musical brings a fresh take on Elle Woods’ Harvard journey. See how she tackles stereotypes, snobbery, and scandal in pursuit of her dreams, all with memorable songs and dynamic dances. This production is by Bingham Musical Theatre Company — it’s their first major city-centre production and they’re a registered not-for-profit charity.
Do if: You’d love to gather your friends for a feel-good time.
Goose Fair 🎡
When: September 26-October 5
Where: Forest Recreation Ground, Nottingham
How much: Free entry
Can you think of a more iconic event in Nottingham than Goose Fair? We think not. For the uninitiated, it is one of the most enormous funfairs in Europe, with rides, food and drink, and bright lights best seen at night. Oh, and having a pot of mushy peas with mint sauce is a must — no ifs or buts.
Do if: You’d love to just have a few hours of relaxing and soaking in a fun atmosphere.
To Farse All Things 🖼️
When: September 26-December 13
Where: Bonington Gallery, Nottingham
How much: Free entry
This two-person exhibition by William English and Sandra Cross is the first time the pair's film, photography, sculpture, sound, and archive collections have been brought together. They are united by a shared ethos grounded in experimentation and hospitality, and the exhibition shows how their lives and practices are intertwined. The preview evening is on Thursday evening 6-8pm.
Do if: You’d love to see an innovative exhibition about two remarkable people (they also founded the groundbreaking vegetarian restaurant The Dining Room!).
Autumn Afternoon Tea 🍰
When: September 28
Where: Norwood Park, Southwell
How much: £32pp adult, £8.50pp child
Head down to the beautiful Norwood Park for an indulgent afternoon filled with sandwiches, sausage rolls, scones, bite-sized sweet treats like carrot cake and black forest brownies. These delights will all go down wonderfully with hot beverages from Stokes Tea and Coffee. There are sittings at 12.30pm and 3pm, and children’s boxes are also available, so little ones can join in too.
Do if: You or someone you love deserves an end-of-the-month treat.

Scores on the Doors 🏆
🌳 Nottingham Forest
Nottingham Forest drew 1-1 with newly promoted Burnley on Saturday. Neco Williams put the Reds ahead in the second minute before Oleksandr Zinchenko turned into his own net for the Burnley equaliser. Forest were also knocked out of the EFL Cup in midweek, conceding two late goals in a 3-2 defeat to Championship team Swansea.
🦌 Mansfield Town
Mansfield Town were beaten 2-1 at Port Vale in League One. The Stags conceded after going down to ten men early on, before Rhys Oates equalised. However Will Evans gave away a stoppage time penalty to consign Mansfield to defeat.
🐦 Notts County
Notts County handed out a 4-0 thumping to Crawley Town, moving them into the League Two playoff places in the process. Scott Robertson, Alassana Jatta and Tyrese Hall (x2) were on the scoresheet in a comfortable win
🏏 Cricket
Nottinghamshire secured a stunning victory against Surrey in the County Championship to seize the initiative in the title race with one game to go. Josh Tongue's five wicket haul inflicted a first defeat of the season on the hosts, and took Notts 14 points clear at the top of the table with a home game against Warwickshire to come. A win or draw with bonus points would be enough for Notts to secure a first Championship since 2010.
🏒 Ice Hockey
The Nottingham Panthers picked up their first win of the season with a 3-1 win away against Manchester Storm in the Challenge Cup, before falling to defeat against rivals Sheffield Steelers, losing 4-1.
