Mamma Mia! 🎭

Set on a Greek island, this story of love, friendship and identity is cleverly told through the songs of ABBA – hello Dancing Queen, The Winner Takes It All, and (of course) Mamma Mia. Follow Sophie’s quest to discover the father she’s never know, which brings her mother face to face with three men from her distant romantic past on the eve of her daughter’s wedding. Dance, jive, have the time of your life – you know the drill.
Do if: You just need a good pick-me-up.
Brush Painting with Feng-Ru Lee 🎨
When: September 30
Where: Lakeside Arts, Beeston

This beginner-friendly introduction will guide you in using soft brushstrokes and fluid ink to paint gorgeous flowers, butterflies, and dragonflies. You’ll also explore the art of Chinese brush painting and be inspired by the tradition of flower-and-bird painting. The aim is to learn to observe with calmness, and to come away with new confidence. Don’t worry if you haven’t done the first class – this is for new and returning students.

An Orchestral Tribute To Tim Burton, Danny Elfman & Beyond 🎶

Experience a hauntingly beautiful celebration of the music that has defined the extraordinary worlds of Tim Burton and beyond, brought to life by The Great British Film Orchestra. For more than four decades, Danny Elfman has been the musical voice behind Tim Burton’s most beloved creations, such as Beetlejuice, Sleepy Hollow, Corpse Bride, and The Nightmare Before Christmas. As well as music from these, there will be other haunting tunes, such as from Casper and E.T.

Fungi Day 🍄

You’ll want to make mushroom in your diary for this one. UK Fungi Day takes place on October 10 – and Sherwood Forest is kicking off a little earlier with a visit from the Nottinghamshire Fungi Group on Saturday. During the free guided walks, they’ll share their expertise and with a variety of specimens for you to see up close. Spaces on these walks are available on a first-come, first-served basis, and you can sign up on the day.
Do if: You’d love to find out more about what grows in our county’s famous forest.
Wheelgate Family Halloween Spooktacular 🎃

This week marks the start of October – and this Halloween Spooktacular has literally everything you’ll need to get into the spirit of it. Carve your own pumpkins, see monster pumpkins, and take part in the spooky silhouette hunt. For those who are brave/fancy even more scares, you can even meet reptiles and handle bugs and creepy crawlies. Finish with a visit to the Witches Wagon (extra £4.49pp) to see magical tricks and have delectable treats.

🗞️ In the city: The Times named Nottingham as one of its top city breaks, with it making number 5 on the list. Writer Ben Aitken named it as ‘Queen of the Midlands’, and recommended breakfast at Yolk, Bear for brunch, and Bustler for street food. Activity-wise, it suggested Hopkinson for antiques and art. 🎡 Roll up, roll up: Goose Fair is officially back in town, with the fairground being at the Forest Recreation Ground until October 4. If you’re wondering what rides and attractions are worth getting on (there is a lot of choice!), BBC Nottingham has put together a handy guide of the ones not to miss. Ride-wise, these include Elevate 85 and the Ferris Wheel, while attraction-wise these (naturally) include cocks on sticks and musheh peas. bbc.co.uk

🌳 Nottingham Forest
Morgan Gibbs-White was a late call up to Thomas Tuchel’s first England squad after the World Cup, replacing Cole Palmer. The Forest midfielder came on as a substitute in England’s 3-2 home defeat to Spain at Wembley.
🏏 Cricket
Nottinghamshire finished 4th in the County Championship after a dramatic loss to Yorkshire. Notts’ title defence ran out of steam with back-to-back defeats at the end of the season. Joe Clarke did, however, finish top of the division scoring charts, with 1,288 for the season.
🏒 Ice hockey
The Nottingham Panthers were beaten 5-3 away at Cardiff Devils in the Challenge Cup before a thumping 5-1 win over Manchester Storm, with Ben Corbeil scoring his first professional hat-trick.
