Notts Going On: Goose Fair and glorious festivals
Good news for Splendour, an Edwardian family home, and lots of events...
Hi there and welcome to Notts Going On — your weekly guide with news, property, events, and more. We’re your umbrella on a very rainy day — basically, we’ve got you covered.
Even though the temperature has dropped, I’m sweating a little bit as I’m running the Robin Hood Half Marathon this weekend! This is my first ever time running one and I’m starting to get a little nervous about it. But, I’ve heard so many great things about the event, so I’m hoping everything will be fine on the day. I’m raising money for Emmanuel House, which is a homelessness charity here in Notts. If you fancy donating, you can see my JustGiving page here.

News 🗞️
🎉 Guess who’s back: Music lovers, rejoice! Splendour has been confirmed to return next year, with it taking place at Wollaton Park on Saturday July 19-Sunday July 20. Actor Vicky McClure said: “It’s that happy time in the Nottingham calendar we all get together, sing, dance in the best park on earth! Can’t wait!” Weekend tickets will be going on sale this Friday at midday, while day tickets will be on sale closer to the time. splendourfestival.com
👀 Line-up reveal: There’s just one month to go until Hockley Hustle, which will hit the streets of Nottingham on Sunday October 20. It has now announced its full line-up, with headliners including ALT BLK ERA, Bridie Squires, and Jayahadadream. They’ll be joined by over 400 artists, who will perform across the city. The festival is also hosting the free Hustle Industry Day this Saturday, which will be filled with panels and workshops on all things 'How To' in the music industry. ⚽ Scores on the doors: Nottingham Forest continued their Premier League unbeaten run with a 2-2 draw at Brighton — a lively encounter which saw Forest star Morgan Gibbs-White controversially sent off along with both managers. Elsewhere, Mansfield Town came from behind to win against Shrewsbury, with League One’s top scorer Lee Gregory adding another goal to his tally for the season. Notts County went down 1-0 at home to Gillingham, with the Magpies now lying 4th in League Two.
Hot Property 🏡
Looking for an elegant family home that still has plenty of character? This six-bedroom Edwardian home in Tuxford is a stunning choice. It has plenty of original features, such as stained glass windows, deep coving, and gorgeous ornate ceilings — the colourful one in the living room area is a real beauty. Other highlights include the sauna, sprawling driveway, and landscaped gardens. It’s marketed by Edlin & Jarvis Estate Agents and seeking offers in excess of £500k (I had to triple check that price!). rightmove.co.uk

Theatre 🎭
What’s On 🗓️
Now That’s What I Call A Musical 🎭
When: Tuesday September 24-Saturday September 28
Where: Theatre Royal, Nottingham
How much: £17-£50.50pp
Have you ever wondered what the Now albums would be like as a musical? No? Whether you have or not, this show sounds like a real treat, as it’s jam-packed with ‘80s tunes. Follow school friends Gemma and April as they take a trip through time, head to their school reunion, and experience plenty of drama. Spandex and hair crimping are optional for attendees.
Do if: You love grooving to nostalgic tunes and are looking for a fun pick-me-up.
Inspire Poetry Festival 📖
When: Thursday September 26-Thursday October 3
Where: Libraries around Nottinghamshire
How much: Free-£10pp
Nottingham has an extraordinary poetry scene, which is being showcased by local talent in this exciting festival. You can wander around exhibitions, try writing in workshops, and see films and performances all relating to this brilliant literary form. I particularly love the look of the Personalised Poems While You Wait (September 27, Sutton-in-Ashfield Library, free) but there are events happening across Beeston, Mansfield, Stapleford, Southwell, Sutton-in-Ashfield, West Bridgford, and Worksop libraries, so you’re sure to find something that suits.
Do if: You want some motivation to start penning your own poems yourself.
After the End of History: British Working Class Photography 1989 – 2024 🖼️
When: Friday September 27-Saturday December 14
Where: Bonington Gallery, Nottingham
How much: Free entry
This exhibition curated by BBC broadcaster Johny Pitts explores life through the lenses of working-class practitioners, who have not only captured their own communities, but their perspectives on the world, too. Artists from the East Midlands include Kavi Pujara whose project This Golden Mile celebrates Leicester's Hindu community and Kelly O’Brien, who was raised in an Irish community in Derby.
Do if: You’d like to broaden your mind while roaming the city centre.
Goose Fair 🎡
When: Friday September 27-Sunday October 6
Where: Forest Recreation Ground, Nottingham
How much: Free entry
Arguably the city’s most famous event of the year, this iconic travelling funfair is the largest in Europe and hosts an amazing range of games, rides, and food stalls. I recommend arriving in the evening to see the neon lights illuminate the Forest Rec and getting a pot of mushehs for the true Notts experience.
Do if: You want to tick off a huge Nottingham bucket list item.
Robin Hood Marathon 🍿
When: Saturday September 28
Where: Broadway Cinema, Hockley
How much: Pay what you feel
See our number one outlaw on the big screen during these showings, where you can see all the famous films he’s featured in in one go. The tickets for all the films are pay what you feel, so you can attend as many as you want. There will also be family-friendly activities throughout the day and most of the films are suitable for kids (apart from Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves which is rated a 12).
Do if: You prefer the idea of doing a movie marathon this weekend, rather than doing the half marathon on Sunday.
