Notts Going On: Waving the flag and marvellous markets
Big wins for the Stags, a gorgeous farmhouse, brilliant theatre, and more...
Hello, and welcome to this week’s Notts Going On! Before we start, I just want to apologise to anyone who received two of our weekend long-reads yesterday. Substack had a glitch and ended up sending doubles. Technology, hey? If you did miss it though, we rounded up our top dog-friendly pubs around Nottinghamshire:
We’ve had a few people say we should do a round-up of restaurants next. There are so many to choose from, but we’ll work on it! If you have any ideas for content or have any suggestions for The Notts Edit, please do email me at editor@thenottsedit.com.
While you’re thinking about those, head on down for all your usual news and events…

News 🗞️
🏴 St George’s Day: You might have noticed the massive England flag that’s been hung up on the council house. This is reportedly the biggest St George’s Cross Flag on display in the country — but some say that it should be bigger. We do wonder how much larger it could possibly be, but that’s just us. It’s there to celebrate St George’s Day, which is on Tuesday. There has been a city centre parade in previous years, but there are no plans for this in 2024. If you do want to partake in some festivities, Sherwood Forest is hosting a special event on Saturday, April 27, where you can learn about being a knight of the realm. visitsherwood.co.uk
🗳️ East Midlands Mayor: The East Midlands Mayoral candidates set out their promises and had heated debates at the East Midlands Mayor hustings on April 19. Notts TV has put together a handy breakdown of each candidate’s priorities, which is well worth a read ahead of time. Candidates with a Nottingham connection include Green Party’s Frank Adlington-Stringer who attended NTU, Ben Bradley who is leader of Nottinghamshire County Council and the Conservative MP for Mansfield, independent Matt Relf who holds office at Ashfield District Council, Lib Dem’s Helen Tamblyn-Saville who lives in Bassetlaw, and Labour’s Claire Ward who is a former MP. Elections are on May 2, so be sure to head down and vote for your preferred candidate. nottstv.com
⚽ Stags are up: Mansfield Town have been promoted to League One. They secured this following their 2-1 win against Accrington Stanley last Tuesday. This will be their first season in the third tier in 21 years. Nigel Clough also won Manager of the Year at the EFL Awards, meaning he was able to celebrate 25 years in management with two big achievements. He told BBC Radio Nottingham that it was “a huge relief to get over the line.” bbc.co.uk
🏃 On the run: Two ‘fugitives’ from Nottingham made it to the final of Hunted and secured a cash prize. The final on Sunday night saw mother and son duo Sade Cooke and Cameron Nightingale split up, with Cameron eventually being captured. Thankfully, Sade got across the finish line and bagged a three-way split of the £100k prize. The Channel 4 programme sees people travel across the country, all while trying to avoid capture from the Hunters — a team of special police and cyber specialists. We have major respect for Sade and Cameron making it to the end. channel4.com
