Notts Going On: Stolen sheep and fun in Sneinton
New shop and bar openings, a Grade II-listed farmhouse, a book festival, and more...
Good morning and welcome to Notts Going On. There are so many reasons to feel positive going into this week, which are making me personally feel so motivated and ready to get on with things.
I’m running the Robin Hood Half Marathon in September and I’ve been training for it super hard. Yesterday, I ran 10 miles for the first time, which I couldn’t do a month and a half ago. In fact, I could only do three miles then. I’m raising money for Emmanuel House, so if you want to find out more about what I’m doing and donate to this brilliant charity, you can do so on my JustGiving page.
If you’ve enjoyed this week’s Notts Going On, please do share it with your folks and help spread the word about The Notts Edit. We’re an independent publication dedicated to showcasing the best of the area, and the more people that know about us, the more we can tell about all the wonderful things happening.
And, if you like what we do, please subscribe to our newsletters so you can receive NGO and our weekend read straight into your inbox for free (yes, really!).

News 🗞️
🗳️ Sea of red: You might have heard that there was a general election on Thursday night, and there were plenty of changes around the area. Rushcliffe (Ken Clarke's former seat) turning red for the first time in 54 years and Nottinghamshire County Council leader Ben Bradley losing his seat in Mansfield were among the Conservative losses in the area. All the constituencies are now Labour, bar Newark where Tory MP Robert Jenrick kept his seat and Ashfield where Reform Party MP Lee Anderson kept his. For all the numbers in your area, Notts TV has a full round-up. nottstv.com
🐑 Have ewe seen them?: Between June 26-30, 126 sheep were stolen from land on Owday Lane in Worksop. 46 ewes and 80 lambs were taken, with all of them having a blue mark on their shoulders. If you have any information, the West Bridgford Wire has plenty of info about how you can contact South Yorkshire Police. And, if it was you, the sheep have been treated with medicine which means they can't be consumed for a while anyway. westbridgfordwire.com
📖 A new chapter: Coinciding with the Newark Book Festival (more on that below), A Fine and Tiny Bookshop is opening in the town on Friday inside LetsXscape Coffee House. Masterminded by local writer Martin Costello, it is aiming to promote independent writers and publishers. He told the Newark Advertiser: “We want the bookshop to be a place that promotes these hard-working and unique writers, both from the local area and farther afield. A place where the reading public can discover the writers that are doing it for themselves.” newarkadvertiser.co.uk
🍸 Drink up: There seem to be so many new bars, cafes, and restaurants popping up, which is so lovely to see. This time around, a New York-style cocktail bar will be opening up on Queen’s Street, in the former home of Red’s True Barbecue. ARC Inspirations, which has bars across the North of England, has been given the go-ahead by the City Council. It recently opened BOX on Thurland Street and won awards for its sensitive conversions, so I’m sure this Grade II-listed building is in safe hands. westbridgfordwire.com

Back for its eighth edition with the theme of the ‘Power of Play’, this festival that spans the town of Newark will have author talks both local and international, street theatre shows, children’s storytelling, workshops, and more. There are so many great activities, but I particularly like the look of The Missing with Michael Rosen (July 11, £12pp), Olympic Moments with John Goodbody (July 13, £7pp), and Confessions of a Teletubby (July 14, £7pp). It’s worth noting that the prices differ between events, but all of them are under £15, from what I can see.
