10 things to do in Nottingham this July
By Eve Smallman

1. Could Be Real Tribute Festival 🎵
When: July 5
Where: Newstead Abbey
How much: From £30.25pp
This is not the greatest song in the world… this is just a tribute. Well, there will actually be quite a few cover songs by the some of the best tribute acts in the country. The festival has an impressive line-up of ten artists spanning a range of genres, such as Attic Monkeys, Supersonic Queen, and Viva 4 Eva Spice Girls. The last final release tickets are on sale, with these and VIP/VVIP remaining. Oh, and Nottingham city residents can bag a discount when putting in their council tax number and postcode at the checkout.
Do if: You want to go to a festival where you know the words of all the songs.
2. Murder Mystery: A Dealing with Death 🔎
When: July 5
Where: Cosy Club, Nottingham
How much: £49.95pp
I think Cosy Club is one of the most stunning venues in Nottingham, and that its ornate architecture and plush interior make it the perfect setting for a deadly murder mystery with added sparkle. You’ll be transported back to 1927 and to Leslie Loot’s gentleman’s club, where you’ll be tasked with unravelling a sinister plot, all while diving into a three-course meal. Fancy dress is required, so make sure to don your best vintage garms.
Do if: You’d rather be part of your Friday night entertainment, rather than just watching it.
3. Here You Come Again 🎭🎵
When: July 9-13
Where: Theatre Royal, Nottingham
How much: From £20pp
For the first time, all of Dolly’s major hits have been rolled into one rollicking, joyous musical. Follow the life of a diehard Dolly fan, as his fantasy version of the country singer gets him through trying times by teaching him to pull himself up by his bootstraps — even though they don’t have rhinestones on them. Expect tunes such as Jolene, 9-5, I Will Always Love You, and more.
Do if: You’re looking for a fun and fabulous pick-me-up.
4. Newark Book Festival 📖
When: July 11-14
Where: Across Newark
How much: From £4pp, many free
This fascinating festival is back for its eighth edition with the theme of the ‘Power of Play’. Experience this across its author talks both local and international, street theatre shows, children’s storytelling, workshops, and family activities. Highlights include Michael Rosen (July 11, £12pp), Olympic Moments with John Goodbody (July 13, £7pp), and Confessions of a Teletubby (July 14, £7pp). The prices vary between events, with all of them under £15.
Do if: You’re looking to fill up your summer reading list with new and interesting books.
5. England Vs West Indies Test Match 🏏
When: July 18-22
Where: Trent Bridge, West Bridgford
How much: £60pp adult, £15pp junior
It’s the summer of sport, and cricket is one of my favourites. This is the first England Test match to grace Trent Bridge since playing New Zealand in 2022, which I went to and loved the electric atmosphere. In my opinion, nothing matches the five-day test format, as it’s filled with nail-biting tension. Thursday and Friday are both fully booked, but there is still availability Saturday to Monday.
Do if: You want to spend the whole day (or more if you’re into it) watching something exciting.
6. Boho Festival 🎵
When: July 26-28
Where: Millview, Newton
How much: £38.75pp adult day ticket, £22.25pp teen
Soak in stunning sunsets and sizzling vibes at this family-friendly festival. The likes of Martin Kemp, Curiosity Killed the Cat, and Jeremy Healy will be playing lively sets, as will tribute acts Blondied and UK Fleetwood Mac. When you’re not dancing, you can take part in activities like yoga, arts and crafts, and forestry classes. You can either go for the day or camp across the weekend to take it all in.
Do if: You missed out on Glastonbury tickets, but still want to party this festival season.
7. Films in the Forest 🍿
When: July 26-28
Where: Sherwood Forest
How much: From £15pp
This is such a clever outdoor cinema concept. All of the films are set in a forest, which you can watch while relaxing in a real one. On Friday you can travel to Middle-earth for Lord of the Rings (7pm), while on Saturday there will be showings of Disney Pixar’s Brave (1pm), Jurassic Park (4pm) and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (7pm). Disney’s Robin Hood (12pm) and The Princess Bride (3pm) will be showing on Sunday. Refreshments will be available, but you can bring your own snacks along with a picnic blanket.
Do if: You want to take movie nights with friends and family to another level.
8. Robin Hood 🎭
When: July 27
Where: Nottingham Castle
How much: £20pp adult, £12pp child
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more fitting open-air theatre event. The stunning grounds of Nottingham Castle will be the stage for Robin Hood and his merry men’s adventures. Will they be able to elude Prince John and the Sheriff of Nottingham? Find out at this show performed by theatre group The Pantaloons. Make sure to bring a rug and to wear comfortable clothing, as you’ll be lounging al fresco.
Do if: You want to kick off the summer holidays with a local legend.
9. Notts Pride 2024 🏳️🌈
When: July 27
Where: Across Sneinton Market and Hockley
How much: Free
One of the most iconic events in the Notts calendar, Pride is back again and will be bigger than ever. Many of the festivities this year will be taking place in Sneinton Market, which will host the Pride stage and stalls. Drag Race’s Tia Kofi will be headlining, with other glittering acts including Rob Green and the Singing Proud Choir. Meanwhile in Hockley, there will be a huge street party, with DJ sets and performances on Broadway’s mezzanine balcony bar. And, don’t forget about the march through the city.
Do if: You want to join in a colourful celebration of individuality.
10. Calligraphy Class with Afternoon Tea 🖋️
When: July 31
Where: Thoresby Park
How much: £35pp
Get creative by learning the art of calligraphy and all its secrets. It’s a mindful way to improve your handwriting, and by the end of the session, you’ll know how to make yours look beautiful. The price includes a Japanese illustrator felt-tipped pen and a notepad to take home, and a delicious afternoon tea and drink to fuel you while you learn your new craft. Spaces are limited to allow for personal mentorship throughout the session, so it’s worth booking sooner rather than later.
Do if: You want to impress summer party guests with personalised invites.
