Notts Going On: How do you say Southwell?
Town name pronunciation, Hollywood meets, and Forest challenges feature in this week's Notts Going On...
It’s Monday morning and I’m questioning how to pronounce words — which isn’t because I haven’t had my coffee. In one of my first vox-pops as a student journo, I went to Gotham and pronounced it as Goth-ham, which got me an earful from locals (it’s Goat-em, apparently). I’ve since been very careful to heavily research places of names before saying them.
In this week’s Notts Going On, we explore why Southwell’s pronunciation made national news, difficulties for Forest, and more…

🏟️ Nottingham Forest could scrap their City Ground redevelopment plans and instead move out, due to a rent dispute with Nottingham City Council. The club chairman Tom Cartledge spoke to the BBC and said ‘they may have to look elsewhere’ if there isn’t ‘significant progress’. Supporters are encouraging Forest to explore all options possible to stay at the City Ground, in order to ensure 125 years of heritage aren’t lost and that local business doesn’t suffer. Find out more about their thoughts on the BBC’s piece.
❤️ Titanic star Kate Winslet met with 11-year-old Lily-Rae from Nottingham who is losing her sight. The Hollywood star left a £5,000 donation on Lily’s ‘visual bucket list’, which has seeing the Northern Lights in a glass dome at the top of the list. When speaking to BBC’s Isaac Ashe, her mother Emma said it felt like they’d know each other forever when they attended My Neighbour Totoro at London's Barbican Theatre. You can find Lily-Rae’s fundraising page on GoFundMe.
💭 Following on from Jay Rayner et al’s visit to Nottingham for BBC Radio 4 podcast The Kitchen Cabinet (listen to that here on BBC Sounds as it’s well worth a listen), The Spectator did a short but interesting piece on how to pronounce Southwell (see it here — the last paragraph is behind a paywall, but most of it isn’t). Rayner pronounced Southwell as South(like the direction)-ell, but I would pronounce it as Suth-ell.
🎭 Who doesn’t love a bit of Dolly Parton? If hits like Jolene and I Will Always Love You are your kind of jams, you might want to head to the Nottingham Arts Theatre. The University of Nottingham Medics Society is putting on performances of 9-5 the Musical from March 7-9 (which you might have spotted in our March events guide). The feel-good show sees three female co-workers who go on a mission to give their workplace a makeover. Tickets are available on the Nottingham Arts Theatre site and are £17pp for adults and £12.50pp for students, seniors, and children under 16.
🏡 You don’t see homes that are light and airy but filled with antique character very often, which is why we’re loving this Victorian home in Keyworth listed on Rightmove for £900k by Holden Copley. Rooms include five bedrooms, two bathrooms, two reception rooms, and an open-plan kitchen and dining room. It’s also filled with characterful periodic features including stained glass windows, a beautiful garden basically made for summer parties, and has rolling countryside views that stretch beyond the back garden.
⚽ 🏏 There was a fiery end to the match between Nottingham Forest and Liverpool at the City Ground on Saturday, with Forest losing 1-0 thanks to a controversial 99th-minute goal from Darwin Núñez (read more on Sky Sports’ piece here). Mansfield extended their lead at the top of League Two to three points with a 1-0 win over Newport, while Notts County’s game was postponed. Meanwhile, in the cricket world, the Trent Rockets announced they are retaining stars Joe Root, Nat Sciver-Brunt, and Alex Hales for the 2024 edition of The Hundred.
