Notts Going On — Joseph’s Technicolor Dreamcoat and Council House clean-up
Musical shows, a Victorian villa in Worksop, scrubbing requests, and more...
Hello and welcome to Notts Going On — your weekly guide with events, property, news, and more.
How nice is it to have the sun shining a little bit? I spent Saturday soaking it in and exploring Derby Road. I used to live around there but don’t visit it very often, so I was pleasantly surprised to see how many lovely shops, pubs, and restaurants there are around there now. I went to Mollis, but the Little Brickhouse is definitely now on my to-go list. Oh, and before I hiked up the hill, I discovered Compa in town, which was a real treat (click through for the full video!).

What’s On This Week 🗓️
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat 🎭
When: February 5-15
Where: Theatre Royal, Nottingham
How much: £25-£63pp
It was red and yellow and green and brown… This musical is full of catchy tunes like Joseph’s Coat, Any Dream Will Do, and Close Every Door. The multi-award-winning show has been performed hundreds of thousands of times including multiple runs in the West End and on Broadway. This version stars X Factor’s Joe McElderry as the Pharaoh, Christina Bianco as the narrator, and Adam Filipe as Joseph.
Do if: The first line of this write-up gave you an ear worm — sorry!
Out and About With Linden 📣
When: February 6
Where: Nottingham Central Library
How much: £6.13pp
Stuart Linden Rhodes is launching his brand new book with this fascinating talk, in conversation with Notts Queer History Archive's CJ De Barra. He'll be sharing fascinating stories about what life was like photographing the '90s queen scene under his pseudonym Linden, due to the Section 28 law. Books and photos will be available to purchase on the day.
Do if: You'd like to learn more about LGBTQIA+ history from those who really know it.
An Evening of Mediumship and Clairvoyance 🔮
When: February 7
Where: Thoresby Park, Newark
How much: £25pp
International psychic consultant and medium Trisha has over 40 years of experience in the clairvoyance world, which she’ll be putting to work at Thoresby Park. She also reportedly has good accuracy and a bubbly personality, so hopefully you’ll get on whether you believe in it all or not. There is also a buffet included in the price of the ticket. You can book by ringing the number on the site.
Do if: You’ve always been a little bit curious about what’s on the other side.
Girls and Boys 🎭
When: February 8-March 1
Where: Nottingham Playhouse
How much: From £10pp
This one-woman show stars Nottingham-born actress Aisling Loftus, and is about how a ‘normal’ relationship begins, blossoms, and unravels with shocking revelations. It was written by award-winning writer Dennis Kelly who also penned Matilda: The Musical, so expect lots of intensity paired with savage humour, such as lines like “I met my husband in the queue to board an EasyJet flight and I have to say I took an instant dislike to the man.”
Do if: You’d like to support a local production and see something brand new.

What’s On This Month ❤️🗓️
Hot Property 🏡
Victorian properties always have so much character, and this six-bedroom villa in Worksop is no exception. Downstairs, it has three reception rooms, a chic green and white kitchen, and two feature fireplaces. Head up and you’ll find the bright and breezy bedrooms and a sleek bathroom (although I’d want to check where that ceiling window is placed!). It was reduced to £470k last week and it’s marketed by Mellor & Beer. rightmove.co.uk
News 🗞
🫧 Scrub it up: The Nottingham Civic Society has branded the condition of Nottingham Council House ‘depressing’, telling Notts TV that the house and the lions are in much need of a clean. Despite the poor appearance, the authority’s leadership says it is not high up on its list of priorities due to continued financial problems. I took the above snap of the Left Lion for our things to do in Notts guide and couldn’t bear to use it in the piece because of the silly eyes. nottstv.com
🍌 A slippery story: The bananas story that took off last month is back again. A plate with 16-20 bananas on popped up on the same street in Beeston on the same day of the month — as it has done for a couple of years. There was even a questionable sauce on top of it (here’s hoping that it was maple syrup!). But this time, the plate appeared in the evening and disappeared the next day. Hmm… Get in touch with the Beeb if you know the culprit. bbc.co.uk
Scores on the doors ⚽
🌳 Nottingham Forest
Nottingham Forest bounced back from defeat last week with a 7-0 (seven!) win over Brighton. A hat trick for Chris Wood, a goal for Morgan Gibbs-White on his 100th Forest appearance, as well as goals for Nico Williams and Jota Silva (plus an own goal) secured their biggest league victory since 1991. However, who were the real winners? Patrons at The Gedling Inn, who were able to get a free pint for every Forest goal (see on bbc.co.uk).
🦌 Mansfield Town
Mansfield took an early lead in their League One clash against Shrewsbury, but were unable to convert that into three points, eventually losing 2-1. A 4th straight defeat leaves them 14th in the League One table, with a Friday night fixture against Northampton to come.
🐦 Notts County
A sublime goal from David McGoldrick (see it on skysports.com) secured a win for Notts County, who won 2-1 away at Gillingham despite a late charge from the hosts. McGoldrick moved to 13 goals for the season, stealing the ball from the Gillingham defender and deftly lifting it over the goalkeeper from the edge of the box. The Magpies sit 3rd in League Two.
🏒 Nottingham Panthers
The Nottingham Panthers won their only game of the weekend with a 3-2 win away at Cardiff. The Panthers have a game on the road against Dundee before a home fixture against Glasgow Clan, in which they'll be wearing a special edition Valentine's jersey.
