Notts Going On — Wreath making and shoebox donations
Festive events, a luxe home in Burton Joyce, an important Christmas appeal, and more...
Hello and welcome to Notts Going On — your weekly guide with events, property, news, and more.
It’s nearly the end of the year, so I’m currently writing and editing the final few 2024 articles. I’m also looking ahead to 2025 and what that’s going to look like for The Edit. If you’d like to have a chat with me about how you can get involved next year (whether you’re a creative, running an event, a business, or anything else!) please do drop me an email at editor@thenottsedit.com.
Enjoyed this week’s Notts Going On? You can subscribe to get it emailed to you every Monday for free. We also send out a longer read every weekend, such as event guides, listicles, and features.
Already subscribed and reading this in your inbox? Thank you very much! You can also share us with friends, family, colleagues, and anyone else who might like what we do. The more people that know about us, the more we can help discover the best of the rebel county.
And, if you want to support our writing, you can buy us a coffee on Ko-fi. We’re an independent publication and don’t put any articles behind paywalls, nor fill the site with ads.

What’s On This Week 🗓️
730 Daily Self-Portraits 🖼️
When: Until December 14
Where: Surface Gallery, Nottingham
How much: Free entry
Artist Chaz Howkins has been creating daily self-portraits of themself since January 1 2021, which they are now displaying at Surface Gallery. They intend to carry on doing self-portraits forever, so there might even be another exhibition in a few years. You can also attend the Create Your Own Self-Portrait workshop this Saturday (December 7) with Chaz, using various drawing and collage techniques to design your own.
Do if: You’d like to start a new challenge in 2025 and are looking for inspiration.
Sheku and Isata Kanneh-Mason 🎶
When: December 3
Where: Rock City, Nottingham
How much: £26.88pp
The Kanneh-Masons have to be the most famous musical family in Nottingham, and two of their talented members will be bringing classical music to Rock City. Isata is a renowned pianist, while Sheku is a brilliant cellist — you may know him from him playing at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding. They’ll be playing everything from great sonatas to newly-imagined favourites.
Do if: You’d like to mix up your evening entertainment with a truly special performance.
Christmas Breakfast With Frozen 🍽️🎄
When: December 7
Where: Thoresby Park, Newark
How much: £14.95pp, £3 parking
The magical Thoresby Park is the perfect location for meeting and greeting Elsa, Anna, Kristoff, and Olaf. You’ll do all this, as well as enjoying a cooked breakfast and drink, plus entertainment from the characters. For those with dietary requirements, make sure to email the Park beforehand. If Frozen isn’t your kids’ bag, you can catch Ariel, Moana, Spiderman and Captain America on December 14 (see here) or Minnie, Mickey, Donald, and Daisy on December 21 (see here).
Do if: You’re looking for a cute way for little ones to get in the festive spirit.
Christmas Wreath Making ✂️🎄
When: December 8
Where: Bustler, Sneinton Market
How much: £65pp
The talented floral artists at EverWild are hosting this wonderful workshop, where you’ll be able to craft your own Christmassy wreath using seasonal foliage and ornaments. The event is suitable for adults and children, but you’ll need to get a wreath each. Or, if you want to go with friends, you can book as a group of four, which will reduce the price down to £50pp.
Do if: You spent Sunday putting up your tree and want to make your home’s outside as inviting as the inside.
Carols By Candlelight 🎶🎄
When: December 8, 15, and 22
Where: Rufford Abbey, Ollerton
How much: £15.95pp
Head down to The Talbot Suite at Rufford Mill for a splendid afternoon of being serenaded by the Carlton Male Voice Choir (we saw them at the It’s in Nottingham Christmas Market and they were fabulous!). Plus, there will also be mulled wine and mince pies to tuck into. They’re also performing on the next two Sundays at the same location and at the same time.
Do if: You’d love to unwind and properly embrace the magic of the season.

News 🗞️
🎁 It’s giving season: The Nottingham Shoebox Appeal has launched again for its fourth year and is looking for donations before December 7. It has pledged almost 1,000 shoeboxes this year to nine charities and organisations, with these going to men, women, and children suffering hardship for a variety of reasons. The appeal is run by Sewa Day and Communities Working Together, and the charities are happy to collect donations directly or to have them dropped off at dedicated points in the city and county. westbridgfordwire.com
👏 Preserving history: The Framework Knitters Museum in Ruddington has secured a grant of over £244k from The National Lottery Heritage Fund. The project this is going towards, titled ‘A Stitch in Time’, is aiming to help reduce costs and secure sustainability, such as the replacement of an outdated gas boiler, wiring repairs, and new roof insulation. The museum is the only one in the county dedicated to the county’s rich textile manufacturing heritage. westbridgfordwire.com
