Notts Going On — Book talks and Lewis Cap-Aldi
Thought-provoking events, a Grade II-listed home in Watnall, a surprise set, and more...
Hello and welcome to Notts Going On — your weekly guide with events, property, news, and more.
I’m resting up today after running the Robin Hood Half Marathon on Sunday! I sprained my foot two weeks before, so I wasn’t sure if I’d even finish. But luckily, once I got going and I had the amazing Nottingham crowd cheering me on, I was okay and even finished 10 mins quicker than last year. I’d still really appreciate any donations for Emmanuel House (justgiving.com) which I ran for.

Notts Going On
By Eve Smallman and Sam Swain
What’s On This Week 🗓️
Superman Presents: Stuntman 💥
When: September 30
Where: Lakeside Arts, Beeston
How much: £16pp
Taking inspiration from action movies, this performance by David Banks and Sadiq Ali will showcase high-octane (and sometimes ridiculous) fight scenes, all while examining the impact that having action hero role models has on men and boys. This intimate and explosive performance will then be followed by a Q&A by the pair.
Do if: You’ve ever enjoyed a violent action movie (but felt slightly weird about it).
Gothic Fiction & The Female Writer 📚
When: October 1
Where: Squire Performing Arts Centre, Nottingham
How much: £17.38pp
When you hear the word ‘horror’, you might think of women in peril. However, women are actually at the heart of the horror genre both as characters and creators. This four-century journey through literary history will uncover how they have done just that, shaping haunting metaphors for real-life struggles. The talk will be delivered by Dr. Joan Passey, who specialises in gothic, horror, and folklore in literature and culture. Few tickets remain.
Do if: You’d like to get some inspiration for seasonal reading in a thought-provoking way.
Oxjam Beeston 🎶
When: October 4
Where: Various venues around Beeston
How much: Free before 6pm, £10pp adult and £5pp child after this
Beeston is such a bustling place, and this weekend is one of the town’s highlights of the year. Oxjam Beeston is celebrating its 15th year, and will be filling 20 venues with over 150 different bands and artists. All proceeds raised will go to Oxfam GB, as well as Middle Street Resource Centre and Broxtowe Youth Homelessness.
Do if: You enjoy festivals like Hockley Hustle, and would like to do something similar outside the city centre.
The Undisputed King of Selston 📚
When: October 4
Where: Bromley House Library, Nottingham
How much: £8pp, £16.99pp including the book
There was a time when Danny felt like the undisputed King of Selston. But, deep down, Danny Scott knew that the real King of Selston was and always would be coal. He explores this in his humorous yet unflinchingly honest memoir, which he is giving a talk about at the iconic Bromley House Library. The freelance writer and journalist now resides in Essex, so this should be a lovely homecoming for him.
Do if: You also resonate with being from a small mining town in Nottinghamshire.
Helen Oxenbury: We’re Going on a Bear Hunt and Other Adventures 🖼️
When: October 4-January 4
Where: The Harley Foundation, Worksop
How much: Free entry
One of the country’s most renowned children’s illustrators, Helen Oxenbury is exhibiting her work at the beautiful Harley Foundation, with over 100 illustrations, including pencil sketches, watercolours, and unpublished pieces. While you’re at the Welbeck Estate, you could also visit the Welbeck Farm Shop for some of their famous bread and cheese, as well as the award-winning Harley Cafe.
Do if: You’d like to go to an exhibition with relaxing works.

News 🗞
🎶 Sing for your supper: Singer-songwriter Lewis Capaldi made waves on Friday when he performed a surprise set on top of an Aldi in West Bridgford, with the store being re-named ‘Cap-Aldi'.’ He played at the Motorpoint Arena later on that day, and was greeted at the venue with a hamper curated by Ed Sheeran and Dispatch in Hockley. All in a day’s work, clearly! itv.com
🎨 Good as new: Newark has got itself its own ‘Banksy’, with an anonymous volunteer sprucing up about 70 old cast iron road signs. The painter responsible told the BBC he has been slowly working his way through the signs around the town. It’s definitely lovely to see the opposite of vandalism happening. bbc.co.uk
