Notts Going On: Disco delights and Robin Hood's knights
Good news for partygoers, an Elizabethan farmhouse, family friendly festivals, and more...
Hi there and welcome to Notts Going On — your weekly guide to news, property, and events around the area.
I headed to Notts Pride this weekend and I absolutely loved seeing the area come together and celebrating the wonderful vibrancy our county has. I thought it worked really well having Sneinton Market as the main area, but still having Hockley and Broad Street in particular as a party zone. If you went down too, please do comment and send your pics!
While this amazing event might be over until next year, there are still plenty of other fun things happening this week and in August, too. More on those below.
This round-up is the flake in your 99 Notts ice cream but, unlike the chocolatey treat, The Notts Edit is all free to enjoy. However, we’d still really appreciate your support, as that’s what helps us grow and spread the good word out. So, please do subscribe to receive our articles in your inbox and share us with friends and family.
And, as ever, if you’d like to be featured in Notts Going On or in The Notts Edit, please drop us a line at editor@thenottsedit.com.

News 🗞️
🪩 Dance the night away: Club lovers can rejoice, as Pryzm is set to reopen under new ownership. The DHP Family — which also runs Rock City, Rescue Rooms, The Bodega, and Stealth — will be restoring it to its original incarnation as The Palais and is set to bring a diverse array of events to the city. The Palais manager Sam Dye says: “As a local business deeply rooted in Nottingham’s music scene, we feel it’s only right to recognise the heritage of the venue and revive Nottingham’s original dancehall. So many generations of families have danced at this iconic venue, so we’re delighted to be bringing it back into use once again.” thepalais.co.uk
🥕 Dig it: Have you ever fancied growing your own fruit and veg, but haven’t got the space to do it? Roots Allotments is opening a space in Ruddington, with 350 plots available for taking up. It will supply all the necessary tools, seeds, plants, and education to help gardeners nurture their green fingers and their produce. Christian Samuel, one of the co-founders who is from Nottingham, says, “We are really pleased to offer local residents the chance to grow their own nutritious, chemical-free fruits and vegetables. Whether someone is an experienced grower or a complete novice, our growing communities are welcome to all.” Prices start from £9.99 a month and you can pre-register on the Roots site. rootsallotments.com
👨🍳 Guess who’s back: Gordon Ramsay just can’t seem to get enough of Notts at the moment, having visited Kushi-Ya a couple of months ago. This time around he headed to Iberico World Tapas, which has had a Bib Gourmand since 2013. The team cooked for Gordon and his family when they visited to celebrate his daughter Tilly’s graduation. Over on its Instagram, the restaurant said it was “an absolute pleasure” to do so. I’ve been to both Bar Iberico and Taquero which is run by the same folks, so I think I need to head over here, too. @iberico_tapas
🎉 New beginnings: It’s wonderful to see so many new restaurants and cafes opening in Notts, and two more major ones have been announced. Loughborough coffee shop and bakery Public and Plants is opening up Low Pavement and is set to feature a ‘Japan meets Copenhagen’ aesthetic, will be dog-friendly, and will have lots of vegan and veggie options. As well as this, Raymond’s — which is owned by the creative force behind MESA Marcus Lewsley — is opening up in Lace Market in Oscar and Rosie’s old building. This will be wine-led and serve up small plates. It’s due open August 7, but it had a soft launch a couple of weeks ago and the food looked delicious, so I’m very excited. ourpublic.co.uk / raymondsnottingham.co.uk
🍿 Lights, camera, action: Did you enjoy the first season of Sherwood? The show is based on true events in our area, was filmed in and around Notts, and was written by Mansfield’s own James Graham. The red carpet screening of the second season will take place at Broadway Cinema on August 19 — and you can be in with a chance of bagging free tickets. These will be randomly allocated, with 80% of them going to those with NG postcodes. You can register anytime before August 9 and can apply for a maximum of two tickets. bbc.co.uk
Hot Property 🏡
This house in Watnall looks straight out of Bridgerton, thanks to its Elizabethan-era charm, but it boasts tons of character that still makes it feel like a home. It has tons of space to roam, including six bedrooms, four bathrooms, a cinema room, and deluxe garden room with its own hot tub enclosure. I also love the mix of contemporary design and Grade II listed features. The guide price is £950k-£1m and it’s marketed by Smith & Co Estate Agents. rightmove.co.uk

Ada Lovelace: Escaping Byron’s Shadow 📜
When: Tuesday July 30
Where: Nottingham Central Library, Nottingham
How much: Free
You’ve probably heard plenty about Lord Byron’s history, but did you know that his daughter Ada Lovelace was a very impressive person, too? The mathematician and writer worked with the father of computers Charles Baggage and was the first person to recognise computers had more potential than just being used for calculations. How right she was. Learn all about her at this talk by Dr Lydia Farina, who teaches philosophy at the University of Nottingham. Tickets are free, but booking is essential, so be sure to snap them up if you’re keen. You can also grab refreshments at the cafe downstairs beforehand.
Do if: You can take an early lunch break and want to fill it with knowledge instead of just scrolling — the talk is 11am-12.30pm.
The Upbeat Beatles 🎶
When: Thursday August 1
Where: Southwell Minster
How much: £34.56pp adult, £26.40
No matter if you love toe-tapping tunes like Can’t Buy Me Love, tearjerkers like Let It Be, or singalongs like Hey Jude, there is a Beatles song for everyone. The Upbeat Beatles will perform tunes such as these at the stunning Southwell Minster, with multiple costume changes and plenty of talent. This will be taking place outside, so be sure to bring your own low-backed chairs and picnic blankets, so you can comfortably enjoy the show. Own alcohol isn’t permitted, but there will be a bar run by Ice & Tipsy (phew).
Do if: You want to celebrate the start of the month in serious style.
Robin Hood Festival: The Knights of Nottingham 🎪
When: Saturday August 3-Sunday August 4
Where: Sherwood Forest, Edwinstowe
How much: Free entry, parking charge £15 per vehicle
We have featured the festival in our summer and August events guides, but I couldn’t help mentioning the first action-packed weekend here. On both days the Knights of Nottingham will return to Sherwood Forest for a dazzling horseback jousting display, which will retell the tale of Robin Hood and his battles with the Sheriff of Nottingham. While you’re there, you can also take part in activities such as archery, see circus skill performers, watch historical re-enactments, and more.
Do if: You want to bring the whole family together for a fun day out.
All & Sundry Art Club 🛍️
When: Saturday August 3
Where: Sneinton Market
How much: Free entry
Sneinton Market always seems to have such a buzz about it nowadays, with plenty of exciting things happening. This time around you can head down and participate in taster creative workshops, browse stalls with beautiful handcrafted goods, and dive into delicious snacks and thirst-quenching beverages. The event takes place between 11am-4pm, so if you are in town and want to browse something other than your usual shops, this looks like a lovely event.
Do if: You want to support the wonderful local makers and creators we have here in Notts.
