Notts Going On — Nottinghamshire Sunflower Experience and cooling tower preservation
End of summer fun, a family home in Burton Joyce, cooling tower conversation, and more...
Hello and welcome to Notts Going On — your weekly guide with events, property, news, and more.
Happy Nottinghamshire Day everyone! Yes, it’s a thing. I hope you are all enjoying the best of the rebel county this bank holiday and soaking up the sunshine. We’re so lucky to live in a place with so many different things to do, places to see, and interesting people to meet.
On a slightly different note — I touch on this in the news section, but I am very sad that this is Notts TV’s last week of broadcasting. Having a varied local media scene is so important, and losing such a key part of that is really difficult. I’ll be tuning in for the last Notts Today on Friday and I highly recommend doing the same.

What’s On 🗓️
The Hundred 🏏
When: August 27
Where: Trent Bridge, West Bridgford
How much: From £21 adults, £5 under 16s
It’s a Midlands Derby at The Hundred this week, with the Trent Rockets playing against the Birmingham Phoenix. The premise of The Hundred is that each innings is 100 balls, making for plenty of fast paced, easy to follow cricketing action. There will also be live DJing, games, and food and drink to make the day all the more fun.
Do if: You keep meaning to go to the cricket — this is one of your last chances to do so this summer.
Nottinghamshire Sunflower Experience 🌻
When: August 27-31
Where: Oaks Lane, Southwell
How much: £8pp adult, £6pp child, under 5s free
This has been open for most of the season, but this is the last week the Sunflower Experience is open before it transitions into a pumpkin patch for autumn. Walk around thousands of sunflowers, finding the most beautiful ones for your home. You can also pick potatoes, courgettes, and wildflowers. The entry cost is redeemable against produce picked and the maize maze.
Do if: You’re looking for a wholesome day out (that’s also super Instagrammable!).

Archery Adventures with Robin and Marian 🏹
When: August 28
Where: Sherwood Forest, Edwinstowe
How much: Family ticket £50
Who better to teach you archery than Robin Hood and Maid Marian? They’ll give the whole family expert advice during a private one-hour slot, where you’ll learn how to use a mixture of different bows, as well as discovering secrets and tricks. Plus, there will be photo opportunities with the pair.
Do if: You’d like to finish the summer holidays with a special activity.
Wine and Words 🍷
When: August 29
Where: Newark Art Gallery
How much: £10pp
The beautiful town of Newark is the perfect place to head to for a creative evening. You’ll be surrounded by artwork, which you’ll use as inspiration to write things like poems, starts to stories, and dialogues. Gallery owner David Moore and writer and facilitator Emma Oldham will also guide shared readings and reflections on the connections between art and writing. A glass of wine is included in the ticket price, but bring your own pen and paper.
Do if: You’re looking for a relaxing way to unwind at the end of the week.
1940s Afternoon Tea Festival 🫖
When: August 31
Where: Belvoir Castle, Grantham
How much: £10pp adult, £6pp child, afternoon tea extra
Take a trip through time to a bygone era during this delightfully nostalgic day. You’ll be able to tuck into afternoon tea in the Aviary Tearoom or by enjoying the Afternoon Tea Picnic Box, along with enjoying dancing and live music from the likes of Johnny Victory and the Blue Bird Belles. Guests are encouraged to don their best 1940s attire for the festival, though period dress is optional.
Do if: You love all things vintage and would love to enjoy this in a stunning setting.

The Nottingham Mill Co-op are milling flour in Sneinton Market — and they want you to start baking there too
Nottingham’s food scene is bursting with exciting ideas at the moment — and one of these is the expansion of the Nottingham Mill Co-op.
Hot Property 🏡
Love a chic and contemporary property? This five-bedroom home in Burton Joyce has plenty of modern touches. The open-plan kitchen and dining room is beautifully airy, with French doors opening up to the garden. It also has a cosy living room, a laundry room, and a home gym space. Upstairs, you’ll find the spacious bedrooms and bathrooms, as well as a large outdoor balcony. It has stylish fixtures and materials throughout that give it texture and dimension. The guide price is £675k and it’s marketed by Elite Homes. rightmove.co.uk
News 🗞
📺 One last hurrah: Notts TV will stop broadcasting on August 29, with Friday offering a special schedule celebrating the channel’s most popular programmes and memorable moments. There will also be the final edition of Notts Today at 5.30pm, reflecting on more than a decade of local stories and achievements. I am sad to see another Nottingham media outlet go and I have enjoyed being on the events slot over the last few months (you can see my last appearance from 5:05 at nottstv.com). nottstv.com
☁️ Preserve and protect: A heritage campaign has been launched for one last set of cooling towers in the UK to be saved and protected. The Twentieth Century Society (TCS), which focuses on buildings constructed from 1914 onwards, says it wants to preserve the iconic structures. It would be great to see the iconic Ratcliffe-on-Soar towers retained, which were decommissioned last year. bbc.co.uk
Scores on the Doors 🏆
🌳 Nottingham Forest
Forest picked up a point against Crystal Palace, with Callum Hudson-Odoi scoring his first goal of the season at a hostile Selhurst Park. Crystal Palace fans, angered by their perceived involvement of the Reds in their demotion to the conference league, unveiled a derogatory banner that is under investigation by the FA. Manager Nuno Espirito Santo also wants to move on from his own comments that his relationship with Evangelos Marinakis has broken down. Oh, and Brazil and Juventus midfielder Douglas Luiz has arrived on loan for the season, along with striker Arnaud Kalimuendo.
🦌 Mansfield Town
The Stags made it three consecutive wins in League Two with a 2-0 win over Blackpool in midweek followed by a 4-1 win over Leyton Orient, lifting them to 9th in the table ahead of their League Cup tie at Everton on Tuesday.
🐦 Notts County
Notts picked up their first win of the season with a 4-1 win over recently relegated Shrewsbury, before a late goal consigned them to a 2-2 draw against unbeaten Bromley.
🏏 Cricket
Nottinghamshire won one and lost two in a busy week in the One Day Cup, beating Hampshire before defeats to Gloucestershire and Surrey. The Trent Rockets men have secured an Eliminator place in The Hundred after a tense victory over Welsh Fire, while the women have kept their hopes alive with back to back wins.
