Notts Going On: Hotcake potholes and brimming pies
Buttery pastries and cosy scarves are sure to warm you up this week
The phrase 'cold snap' has never applied more than this past week.
Over the weekend, I saw a duck walking on ice at Colwick Country Park (a fine place for a free day out in Notts), which was very cute.
Don’t worry — I did stick around long enough to see it return to the water. It certainly made me wrap my jacket around myself a bit more, though.
Whether you're bundling up like I did and heading out or bedding down in the warm, these tidbits are all useful to know for the week ahead.

🚨 It's your last chance to enter It's in Nottingham and Visit Nottinghamshire's competition for a family weekend break (February 3-4). One lucky winner will be able to stay at the Hilton Nottingham, dine at Bear with a £100 tab, and see the Light Night installations. The competition closes this Tuesday, January 23.
🧣 If you're not hooked on The Traitors yet, this is your sign to get into it. During one of last week's episodes, Claudia Winkleman was seen sporting this gorgeous jumbo scarf. It's made by Rose & Wül, a premium knitwear company based in Notts which makes pieces by hand. Founder Nadine Rose has previously spoken to LeftLion about her makes.
🎵 This Sunday is Beat the Streets, which is an annual one-day music festival that raises money for local homeless charity Framework. Over 50 artists are playing across multiple stages, making it an action-packed day for music lovers. You can buy wristbands at Alt Tickets, which has different pricing depending on how much you'd like to donate.
🥧 It’s 100% pie and mushy pea weather at the moment, so it just makes sense that it's National Pie Day on January 23. If you need a fix, Project Pies on Carlton Hill is well worth a look. The speciality pie shop's offering includes steak and stilton, chilli chicken, and pork pies filled with onion chutney and red Leicester. It’s open Wednesday-Sunday, so while you can’t get one on Pie Day itself, you can bag one to pay homage to the day the rest of the week.
🗓 Have you still not picked up your 2024 calendar yet? Gedling resident Brian Bailey spoke to Notts TV about creating ones celebrating the area's hot spots: potholes. The idea started as a joke, but the calendars have now been printed out and are helping raise awareness for the problems locals are facing with these. These are £7 each, with proceeds going to cancer support charity Maggie's. You can find out more about them and the protest on the Facebook group Gedling Borough Potholes.
⚽️ Nottingham Forest were 'stung by Brentford' over the weekend, writes The Nottingham Sport. Losing 3-2 away, the Bees now sit above them at 14. League Two's Notts County and Mansfield Town games were both postponed following pitch inspections.
