Notts Going On: Rave reviews and historic wins
We're celebrating so many remarkable things in this week's Notts Going On
I’m always so proud when Notts hits the headlines for brilliant things. We have such a wonderful culture here that thrives and supports each other. From the brilliant independent foodie scene to the supportive creative arts scene, it’s no wonder so many big names have come out of our city.
This week’s Notts Going On covers plenty of these and has really reminded me how lucky I am to live here.

🍜 The acclaimed food critic Jay Rayner paid a visit to Everyday People for his Observer column, who was thoroughly impressed with everything from the 'properly crafted, precisely executed' ramen to the thoughtful side plates. Last year he visited Kushi-Ya, which made it very hard to get a seat there — so if you want to try Everyday People, you might want to be quick booking (you can do that here). Speaking of, the Japanese restaurant announced last week it’s moving to Thea Caffea’s old spot, straight ahead of Cartwheel in town.
⛸️ Torvill and Dean, the famous Notts skating duo who won gold with Bolero at the Winter Olympics, performed the iconic dance 40 years on at the Skenderija Cultural and Sports Centre in Sarajevo (see here on the BBC). We’re very impressed that they’ve still got the most wonderful moves. In 2025 they’ll be embarking on their final tour before retirement and will be performing in Nottingham (you can find tickets here on the Motorpoint site).
🎶 If belting out your favourite show tunes sounds like your idea of a good time on a Saturday night, the Royal Concert Hall has got a treat for you on February 24. West End leading lady Louise Dearman is teaming up with the International Film Orchestra and the Nottingham Trent University Choir to play songs from musicals such as The Lion King, The Sound of Music, Les Misérables and more. Tickets are available on the TRCH site and are £21-£30 full price and £5 for NTU students.
🏆 Actor and director Samantha Morton was honoured with a BAFTA Fellowship at Sunday night’s BAFTAs. It is the highest accolade the arts charity gives in recognition of outstanding contributions to film, games, and television. In her beautiful speech (watch it on YouTube here), she thanked Nottingham and said film transformed her life. Other fellows include Charlie Chaplin, Judi Dench, and Christopher Lee, so Samantha is certainly in good company.
🏡 For those who love a touch of luxe, this swish Beeston detached house on Rightmove is giving us all the Selling Sunset vibes. The contemporary home has a huge entrance hall, as well as six bedrooms including a master with a balcony(!), and four bathrooms. Don’t even get us started on the gorgeous open-plan kitchen, with inset unit lighting and a huge breakfast bar. It’s just come on the market at a cool £1.1m.
⚽ Our jaws were left firmly on the floor at Mansfield’s outstanding result last Tuesday. They finished up 9-2 against Harrogate Town, becoming the first EFL side to score nine goals in a game since 1998. While they did slip to a 2-1 defeat at Walsall on Saturday, they remain second in League Two. Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest secured a 2-0 win against West Ham and pulled themselves five points clear of the relegation places. Notts County fell to a 1-0 defeat at Wrexham.
