Notts Going On: Goodbyes and hellos to music legends
We have plenty of news from Nottingham's vibrant arts scene this week...
Top of the morning to you all and a happy belated St Patrick’s Day. The city centre was absolutely buzzing over the weekend with festivities and revellers, and there were even performances in Old Market Square which we very much enjoyed.
Speaking of concerts, there are plenty of music-y bits in this week’s Notts Going On. From rock god ashes to goodbyes to legends, we’ve got you covered with useful info for the week ahead.

🎸 The ashes of music legend Lemmy Kilmister, who fronted Motörhead, will be displayed at Rock City. First, they'll be placed at Derbyshire’s Bloodstock Festival in the RAM Gallery, before being moved to Rock City, where they will stay until being returned to Bloodstock each year going forwards. In a statement, Rock City said, "We are honoured to house the Lemmy Bust and we can’t wait to have fans from all over the world pay their respects to one of the rock gods." ✈️ The world's first electronic time capsule landed at East Midlands Airport over the weekend. It will contain predictions of the future from children, who submitted these to radio station Fun Kids. The capsule itself is made from a decommissioned scuba tank with custom electronics, which will count down the time and unlock in 100 years' time. Find out more on the West Bridgford Wire's piece here.
🎶 Glastonbury announced its lineup last week, and we were pleased to see Notts being repped. Sleaford Mods will be playing on the Woodies stage, among the likes of Jamie XX and James Blake. Meanwhile, London Grammar will be on The Park stage, along with King Krule and Fontaines D.C. London Grammar formed in 2009 while studying at the University of Nottingham. You can check out the full lineup here.
💔 Nottingham venue The Chameleon is hosting its final gig after two decades of providing a stage for upcoming artists. Acts that have broken through after playing here include Blossoms, Royal Blood, and The Amazons. Sleaford Mods, mentioned above, also met there. You can read more about the venue’s closure on the BBC piece here. The last concert will be held on March 30, with Blind Eye headlining, and Scene Killers, 8mm Orchestra, TV Crime, and Every Face Becomes A Skull also appearing on the bill. It looks like tickets have sold out, but keep an eye on the Facebook event page as last minute ones may crop up.
✨ Hey now, if you're an all-star, you're going to be as excited as we were to find out Shrek the Musical is on this week at Theatre Royal from Tuesday to Sunday (March 19-24). Leave all your troubles far, far away in this epic tale which sees Shrek and Donkey go on their quest to save Fiona. We're curious to see how they manage to get the dragon up on the stage. Tickets start at £23pp and have limited availability, so you might want to be quick (grab them on the TRCH site here).
🕯️ We love a wholesome event, and this candle-making workshop by the Scented Studio on Saturday (March 23) could not be any cuter. At the Pig and Pudding in Cotgrave, you'll be able to make your own scented soy candle and even create a scent to go in it. There will also be refreshments on arrival and a grazing box to nibble on while you work. At the end, you'll get to take home your candle and a goodie bag worth £20. Tickets are £65pp and include everything — more info on the Scented Studio page here.
🏡 When it comes to looking at homes, we always look and see if it has a great kitchen first. The Huntingdon Drive home in The Park, listed by FHP Living, ticks that box (see it here on Rightmove). The breakfast kitchen has a bright and open feel, quartz countertops and classic cabinets, along with plenty of areas to sit and dine. This elegant feel runs through the whole house, with two reception rooms with ornamental fireplaces, five bedrooms including a master on the second floor, and a garden with a patio and shrubbery beds. It's listed for a cool £1.275m.
