Notts Going On — Fungi up close and big news in Beeston
Musical shows, a chic Mapperley Park home, bananas and plaques, and more...
Hello and welcome to Notts Going On — your weekly guide with events, property, news, and more.
It has been so cold, right?! I shiver just looking at the minuses on the forecast, never mind stepping out into. But I have to admit, the blue skies and frosty scenery have been pretty beautiful. It’s definitely the perfect weather for a winter walk — and we’ve got an article just for that:

Fungi Up Close 🖼️
When: Until February 27
Where: Worksop Library
How much: Free entry
Talented photographer Alex Hyde has roamed local locations such as Sherwood Forest and Maun Valley Park, taking fascinating snaps of (you guessed it) fungi up close. There are over 144,000 species of these — and Alex has captured some of them beautifully. If you’d like to learn more about this process, he’s hosting Stories Behind the Lens at the library for £3pp on February 6.
Do if: You love seeing nature in new and exciting ways.
International Postcard Show 🖼️
When: Until February 8
Where: Surface Gallery, Sneinton Market
How much: Free entry
This long-running exhibition features hundreds of artworks from around the world, with mediums such as paint, print, and textile used to create imaginative postcard designs. It’s free to visit, but if you do see one that catches your eye, you can purchase a card for £15. There will also be the chance to vote for your favourite.
Do if: You’d like to see artwork that has never been displayed before.
Nottingham Vintage Kilo Sale 🛍️
When: January 18
Where: St Mary’s Church, Nottingham
How much: £3pp early bird, £2pp standard entry
Look through vintage garms from the ‘60s onwards during this shopping event, where rails will be refreshed throughout the day with characterful clothing. The early bird ticket gets you in at 11am, and then after that you can book to arrive for whichever hour time slot works for you between 12-4pm. This is just for entry — after this, you’ll pay per kilo (0.05kg will cost just £1).
Do if: You’d like to refresh your wardrobe for the new year in a sustainable way.
Johnny Cash Roadshow 🎶
When: January 18
Where: Theatre Royal, Nottingham
How much: £29-36pp
This roadshow is celebrating 20 years of performing tunes by the American country singer this year, and is stopping off at our own Theatre Royal. Clive John brings together the best of Cash’s catalogue, playing songs such as I Walk the Line, Ring of Fire, and Boy Named Sue. Meghan Thomas as June Carter will also be joining him for some shared hits.
Do if: You’ve always thought it would have been cool to see Johnny Cash live — this is as close as you’ll get.
Harmony at the Hall 🎶
When: January 19
Where: Wollaton Hall, Nottingham
How much: £11pp
Do you like jazz? Most importantly, do you like cool jazz? Whether you do or just like smooth tunes, the Cool Jazz Quintet will be inside the Great Hall performing foot-tapping, easy-listening swing and Latin from the 1930s-70s. The show starts at 2pm, so you could always squeeze in a stroll around the park beforehand.
Do if: You’re looking for a chilled-out Sunday afternoon activity.

What’s On This Year 🗓️
Hot Property 🏡
Bright, modern, and oh-so-chic, this five-bedroom home in Mapperley Park is a seriously luxe choice. Downstairs, it has two reception rooms and a breakfast kitchen. Upstairs, you’ll find the bedrooms, including a master with its own en-suite. I particularly love the stunning chandeliers that hang from the ceilings in the landings (see pic 25 in the image gallery). There’s also an enclosed garden and an elevated pergola that’s basically made for a hot tub. The property is listed at £850k and is marketed by Purple Bricks. rightmove.co.uk
News 🗞
🙌 Making history: A historical plaque for Eleanor Littlewood MBE has been unveiled in Beeston. The Beeston and District Civic Society has installed 35 plaques since 2009, but it was previously noted these were all for men. Eleanor’s marks her work as the first female chairwoman of the local council. On Sunday, there was a ceremony at her former home at Manor Lodge, Middle Street. The plaque is red to mark the society’s 50th year. bbc.co.uk
💸 Extra, extra: Wollaton Hall is introducing an entrance fee for visitors, as part of plans to raise more funds to maintain the iconic landmark. The exact fee hasn’t been decided yet, but this will just apply to the Hall and Museum, and not to the outside park. The Nottingham City Council-run property was added to Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register in 2023 due to extensive water damage. westbridgfordwire.com
🍌 It’s gone ‘nanas: Remember the bananas on a plate in Beeston story from last week? The BBC Nottingham piece has now been picked up everywhere, from national media like The Guardian and BBC News, international media like CBC, and radio stations like BBC Radio 1 (link goes to X). But, it’s still a mystery who it is! If you know who the slippery culprit may be, get in touch with the Beeb. bbc.co.uk
Scores on the doors ⚽
🌳 Nottingham Forest
Forest secured a place in the FA Cup 4th Round with a comfortable 2-0 win over Luton Town on Saturday. Goals from Ryan Yates and Ramon Sosa saw the Reds through to an away game against League Two Exeter City. Forest are in action on Tuesday against league leaders Liverpool at the City Ground in a tantalising top-of-the-table clash.
🦌 🐦 Mansfield Town and Notts County
A frozen pitch meant Mansfield Town's FA Cup game against Wigan was postponed, with the winner to host Premier League team Fulham. Notts County also had their League Two game against Grimsby called off for the same reason.
🏒 Nottingham Panthers
A 4 -1 Sunday evening win away against Dundee Stars meant the Panthers avoided three away defeats in three days. Sitting 4th in the Elite League, they'll be looking to return to form as they face Coventry Blaze in Nottingham on Saturday.
