What’s On 🗓️
A Thousand Splendid Suns 🎭
When: May 13-24
Where: Nottingham Playhouse
How much: From £14pp
This powerful new production of A Thousand Splendid Suns is Khaled Hosseini’s spiritual sequel to The Kite Runner, with a mother-daughter element instead of a father-son one. The drama follows Laila and Mariam — two women who share the same husband — and follows their bond as it grows stronger, even in the war-ravaged Afghanistan of 1992. Keep an eye out for our review of the show.
Do if: You’d like to watch something new and moving this week.
Knit for Notts 🧶
When: May 14
Where: Rudy’s Pizza, Nottingham
How much: £3.41pp
Learn to knit or crochet to create blankets for people in need during this cosy evening event at Rudy’s Pizza — one of our favourite Italian food spots in Notts. All proceeds and donations go to Sharewear Nottingham, supporting those facing clothing poverty. The event lasts for two and a half hours, giving you plenty of time to chat and eat. Just make sure to bring your own needles and yarn.
Do if: You like the idea of learning a new skill and making a difference.
The Vanishing: A Screening and Talk 🍿
When: May 15
Where: Nottingham Central Library
How much: £7pp or pay what you feel
This gripping psychological 1988 thriller follows a man’s obsessive search for the truth behind his girlfriend’s disappearance, which comes with a terrible price to pay. After the screening, there will be a special talk with Dr. Christina Brennan, who is the author of the first book about the film. She’ll explore its production history, lasting impact and connection to classic Hitchcock’s films.
Do if: You’re a fan of slow-burn thrillers and love film discussions that go beyond the screen.
Creative Printing at Beeston Library 🎨
When: May 17
Where: Beeston Library
How much: £19.25pp
Explore the art of creative printing in this hands-on course at Beeston Library. You’ll learn how to create beautiful surface designs on paper and fabric using gel plates, hand-carved blocks, and stencils. By the end, you’ll have plenty of knowledge about pattern theory and formation, as well as how to add depth to printed surfaces. You’ll need to wear an apron or a big shirt, bring wet wipes, and print media.
Do if: You’d love to do a mindful craft activity.

Hot Property 🏡
This four-bedroom home in Trowell is chic and contemporary. It has an open-plan living space straight out of a magazine, with a glass feature wall, exposed brickwork, and skylights. This then leads into the spacious kitchen, complete with a breakfast bar, smart grey units, and window seating. Head upstairs and you’ll find the four bedrooms — the principal bedroom with wooden beams is especially striking. Plus, all the bathrooms are seriously hotel-style. The garden also has modern landscaping, with a patio and winding path. It’s marketed by Robert Ellis and is listed at £600k. rightmove.co.uk

News 🗞
🌳 A real inspiration: A new project by the University of Nottingham saw academics laser scan the iconic Major Oak tree, creating a model of the landmark which can be used to assess how it is changing with time. Nottingham-based Caroline Locke has commissioned new work in relation to this project, which will show how artists have reflected on personal connections to the tree. These will be displayed in the FOREST exhibition at Nottingham Castle from May 24-November 2. bbc.co.uk / nottinghamcastle.org.uk
🎶 Music to our ears: Beat the Streets — the music festival staged by DHP Family in support of homelessness charity Framework — has seen its fundraising total break through the £500k milestone. This has all been raised since the festival began in 2018. The contributions made possible by this have included specialist street outreach team members, keeping emergency accommodation open throughout the year, and providing crucial funds to complete Akins House. beatthestreetsuk.com
🍽️ Tuck in: Nottingham Restaurant Week is returning from June 2-8, and is set to showcase the very best of the city’s diverse dining landscape with exclusive menus, special offers, and culinary experiences at participating restaurants across Nottingham. There will also be four guided food tours, offering small group experiences led by award-winning Hidden Food Tours. itsinnottingham.com
Scores on the Doors
🌳 Nottingham Forest
Nottingham Forest will be playing European football next season, confirming at the very least a place in the UEFA Conference League after a 2-2 home draw against East Midlands rivals Leicester City. Morgan Gibbs-White and Chris Wood pulled the Reds into the lead after going behind early on, but a late Leicester equaliser cost them the chance to move back into the Champions League qualification places with two games to play.
🐦 Notts County
Notts County were left to rue several missed chances in their 1-0 home defeat against AFC Wimbledon in the first leg of the League Two play-off semi-finals. Wimbledon keeper Owen Goodman made a string of good saves, and Notts missed further chances to score before and after Riley Harbottle scored the winner. There was controversy late on as Alassana Jatta was sent off for a clumsy challenge, meaning Notts will be without their top scorer for the away leg on Saturday.
🏏 Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club
Nottinghamshire secured their second biggest first-class win by runs and underlined their table topping credentials with a 366 run victory over Hampshire. Freddie McCann's first innings 138 set the tone as he, along with Liam Patterson-White and Jack Haynes scored centuries in the match. Overseas signing Mohammad Abbas took five wickets in Hampshires first innings before Brett Hutton and Lyndon James blew them away in their second. The Blaze fell to a four wicket defeat in their One Day cup game against Lancashire over the weekend.
