Notts Going On — Winter walks and Forest frenzy
Seasonal photography, a cosy Mansfield home, Scores on the Doors, and more...
Hello and welcome to Notts Going On — your weekly guide with events, property, news, and more.
It’s good to be back after a little break over the festive period. I hope you’re all feeling well-rested too — even if you’re sat at your desk right now, slightly bleary-eyed and clutching a coffee like I am.
I’m excited to see how The Notts Edit grows in 2025. Putting together our 2024 best of feature list really reminded me how many great articles we’ve published. I can’t wait to do more like these this year.
💰 We’re also now offering guaranteed inclusions. If you’re a business in Nottingham looking to expand your reach, please do email me at editor@thenottsedit.com if you’d like to see our media pack.
✉️ Enjoyed this week’s edition? Subscribe for free to get it emailed to you every Monday (usually!). We also send out a longer read every weekend, such as event guides, listicles, and features.
Already subscribed to The Notts Edit? Thank you very much! You can also share us with friends, family, co-workers, and anyone else who might like what we do. The more people that know about us, the more we can help discover the best of the rebel county.
☕ And, if you want to support our writing, you can buy us a coffee or a hot chocolate for just £5 on Ko-fi. We’re an independent publication and don’t put any articles behind paywalls, nor fill the site with ads.

What’s On 🗓️
Winter Photography Walk 📸
When: January 11
Where: Clumber Park, Worksop
How much: Free to do, £5pp site entry
Clumber Park is one of our favourite spots for winter walks, and this particular one is extra special. The park’s talented photographers will help you capture stunning shots of the scenery, as the afternoon goes from sunset to dark. You can do this with your phone or a professional camera if you have one. Just make sure to pack a flashlight and wear boots you don’t mind getting muddy.
Do if: Getting your steps up is one of your New Year’s resolutions.
Winter Draws On 🎭
When: January 12-18
Where: Squire Performing Arts Centre, Nottingham
How much: £8pp, £4pp under fours
You may have thought panto season was behind you — but think again, as there are still some on, like this one. Follow the adventures of kitchen boy Leif as he tries to foil Winter’s dastardly plot to freeze Pantobergen. Can Leif and his friends get there in time? The whole show is put together by the Nottingham University Hospitals Pantomime Society and will help fund gifts and sundry items for patients.
Do if: You’re not ready to let go of festive fun just yet.
Girls Gone Sober x Poetry Night 🎤
When: January 12
Where: Malt Cross, Nottingham
How much: Free entry
This inclusive event will bring together poetry and connection through performances and heartfelt conversations. There will be two 45-minute sets, with various poets performing throughout the evening. It will run from 6-8pm, making it a lovely cosy Sunday evening activity option. The event will be hosted by Girls Gone Sober, which is a community dedicated to embracing sobriety, tackling loneliness, and empowering people.
Do if: You’re doing Dry January, are sober-curious, or are already on your sobriety path.

Hot Property 🏡
If you’ve ever imagined tucking yourself away in a house surrounded by nature, this is the home for you. The Hermitage in Mansfield is surrounded by foliage and links into the nearby Kings Mill Reservoir, forming a path of local nature reserves through to the town centre. Inside you’ll find a modern yet inviting interior, with rooms such as a colourful conservatory, a cottage-style kitchen with an island, and a master with fitted wardrobes. The four-bedroom home is listed at £499.95k and is being marketed by Richard Watkinson & Partners. rightmove.co.uk
News 🗞
🍌 That’s bananas: We don’t tend to cover crime in NGO, but this ‘littering’ story did pique our interest, so here it is. Every 2nd of the month, a mystery plate with between 16-20 peeled bananas on it keeps being left on a Beeston street, without being removed. Residents are divided on how much they’re causing a nuisance. Do you know the identity of the banana bandit? Get in touch with the BBC. bbc.co.uk
🎨 Levelling up: On December 20, Nottingham City Council granted gaming giant Games Workshop permission to build a new £9m factory on its Lenton Lane site. This will allow the creators of Warhammer, who entered the FTSE 100 index last month with a £4.3 billion valuation, to expand its operations. We really enjoyed the Notts TV feature published last week about the company’s impressive history. nottstv.com
Scores on the doors ⚽
🌳 Nottingham Forest
Forest can end this round of Premier League fixtures level on points with 2nd place Arsenal if they beat Wolves on Monday night. They will be aiming for the club record of six consecutive top-flight wins. Their record-equalling run has included wins over Manchester United, Tottenham and Brentford.
🦌 Mansfield Town
Mansfield Town had been on a 5-game-winless run in early December but bounced back in style with three wins in four over Christmas and New Year to revitalise their League 1 playoff push. Top scorers Lee Gregory and Will Evans were on the scoresheet at the weekend as they beat fellow playoff hopefuls Stockport County 2-1.
🐦 Notts County
Notts looked to have regained their early season sparkle after a tough run with some high scoring Christmas wins, including a thrilling 5-3 win over Cheltenham on December 29. The Magpies sit 6th in League 2 after their weekend 2-0 win over Swindon.
🏒 Nottingham Panthers
The Panthers moved themselves up to 4th in the Elite League over Christmas. Highlights of their Christmas include a 4-2 away win against fierce rivals Sheffield Steelers and a 9-2 demolition of Coventry Blaze.
