Notts Going On: Big leaps and adventure trails
Olympic news, a schoolhouse in Arnold, a family-friendly trail, and more...
Good morning and welcome to Notts Going On — your weekly guide of news headlines, events, and property in the area.
I want to start by touching on the protests that happened on Saturday. It was disheartening to see so many people coming here looking to cause trouble, but I was pleased to see that Notts stood up them. I’m so glad that no one was hurt and that our beautiful city wasn’t damaged in the same way others have been. If you want to read more about the protests, you can do so on the BBC News site.
Over the weekend I was exploring Nottingham Cathedral with a bunch of other brilliant local heritage folks. It was amazing seeing all the restoration work that’s currently underway and going into the bell tower and crypt, which aren’t usually open to the public. You can watch our TikTok exploring it (and please give us a follow, as we almost have 1,000 followers!).
If you’ve read this week’s Notts Going On and aren’t subscribed to our mailing list, do sign up. It’s totally free and you’ll receive NGO and our weekend read in your inbox every week (apart from this weekend, as I’ll be away).
And, if you are already subscribed or just enjoyed this read, give us a share. The more people that know about The Notts Edit, the more we can share the good word about Nottingham to.

News 🗞️
🐶 A fresh start: I thought I’d kick things off with a cute feel feel-good story. Nottinghamshire Police’s latest recruit is an adorable rescue puppy, who’s just four months old. Maverick is a Belgian Malinois who was recruited from the Dogs Trust, which has provided the force with three other animals in the past. Sgt Nicholas Dachtler, from Nottinghamshire Police's dog unit, told BBC News that officers “are very optimistic about his future.” With that little face, how could you not be? bbc.co.uk
🏅 Going for gold: The Olympics are well underway, and this year Nottingham is represented in Paris by gymnast Becky Downie. This is her first time back on the Olympic stage in eight years, having made her debut at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 at just 16 years old. On Sunday she performed a complex routine on the women’s uneven bars, but fell, meaning she ended up placing 7th. Meanwhile, Uttoxeter’s swimmer Adam Peaty, who supports Nottingham Forest, gained a silver medal in the 100m breaststroke, missing out on gold to Italy’s Nicolo Martinenghi by just 0.02 seconds. ⚽ Kick-off: Football season is back, with pre-season friendlies and start of the season games happening this week. Just to give you a little recap, Nottingham Forest begins its third successive season in the Premier League, Mansfield Town starts life in League One, and Notts County remains in League Two. Forest plays Olympiacos away on Thursday (both teams are owned by Evangelos Marinakis), Mansfield is playing Barnsley in their first League One fixture on Friday, and Notts County is playing Tranmere away on Saturday.
Hot Property 🏡
I’m in love with the unique design of this house in Arnold, which is a former schoolhouse converted into a residence. Inside it has rooms such as a vaulted lounge diner and living room, an airy diner, and four bedrooms including a master with a stunning arched window, a walk-in wardrobe, and an ensuite bathroom. Outside it has a large patio, a greenhouse, and two useful outbuildings. The spiral staircase also looks like a whole lot of fun. It’s marketed by HoldenCopley and the guide price is £820k. rightmove.co.uk
And…
While putting together Hot Property, I also stumbled across an intriguing ‘Discreet Listing’ in Lambley. There are just two pictures of champagne bottles and glasses, so if they’re only selling those, £800k is a lot for them. Any guesses on who might currently own the house? rightmove.co.uk

Robin Hood’s Adventure Trail 👨👩👧
When: Throughout August
Where: Around Nottingham
How much: Free
Help Robin Hood find his merry friends this summer by following this family-friendly trail around the city centre. You can pick up a map from venues such as Broadway Cinema, the Motorpoint Arena, and Nottingham Castle, but if you’re one of the first 200 people to pick one up from Nottingham Contemporary, you can get a free Robin Hood map. Or, you can see the PDF here and follow the trail on your phone. I also love the illustrations and design of it, put together by @anna_the_designer and @melissajanart who are both local artists.
Do if: You’re looking to explore more of Nottingham this summer (whether you have little ones in tow or not!).
Beauty and the Beast 🎭
When: August 7
Where: Wollaton Hall
How much: £22pp adult, £13.20pp child
See this enchanting tale as you’ve never seen it before at Nottingham’s very own beautiful Elizabethan mansion. It’s set to feature original songs, puppets, and lots of humour, so it’s sure to make kids and adults alike smile. If you like the sound of this but don’t have time this week, the same show is also at Newstead Abbey on August 30.
Do if: You want to see a fairytale performance at a real ‘castle’ without jetting off on a plane.
Nottingham Shakespeare Company’s Henry V 🎭
When: August 7-17
Where: Various venues around Nottinghamshire
How much: Free
Soak in the sunshine and some seriously dramatic theatre during these free outdoor theatre performances of Henry V. The epic tale of power and glory is touring the county for two weeks, with this week’s performances being at The Roundhouse (August 7), Victoria Park (August 8), Ruddington Green (August 10, 2pm), Victoria Embankment (August 10, 7pm), and Newcastle Circus (August 11).

Family Fun Day at Trent Bridge 👨👩👧
When: August 11
Where: Trent Bridge, West Bridgford
How much: £6pp, under 16s £1pp
Head down to Nottingham’s cricket pitch for a day of family fun, starting from 9am right up to 6pm. Even if you aren’t that into cricket (which starts at 11am) there is plenty to get stuck into, with activities such as retro gaming, slime making, and hula hooping, as well as face-painting and glitter tattoos (if you’re so inclined). You can also wander onto the turf during the interval and grab selfies and autographs from the Outlaws players after the game, who will be playing Essex.
Do if: You want to entertain the kids for a whole day without spending a lot.
Declan McKenna 🎭
When: August 11
Where: Rock City, Nottingham
How much: £43.19pp
Gigs at Rock City always have a good vibe, and this gig on Sunday has a few tickets still left. Singer-songwriter Declan is bringing his unique blend of lo-fi pop and indie-rock, matched with thought-provoking and political lyric, to the iconic venue. His debut single Brazil skyrocketed him to fame, which was a protest song against the FIFA 2014 World Cup and he also submitted for his music GCSE. He’ll be supported by Soft Launch, which is a London-based boyband.
Do if: You want to make the most out of your Sunday evening, instead of just lounging on the sofa worrying about Monday.
