Notts Going On — Wing Fest and the city’s 1,000th cave
Food and racing events, a bright home in Lambley, new discoveries, and more...
Hello and welcome to Notts Going On – your weekly guide with events, property, news, and more.
A note from the editor
For two and a half years, The Notts Edit has been publishing newsletters and weekend reads. We’ve also been reviewing some of the best of what the area has to offer, and from this week we’ll be sending these out to subscribers.
The mid-week review will be (you guessed it) a review, an opinion piece, or a short feature about something our writers have seen, eaten, or done in the Rebel County. You’ll see the first in your inbox this week, and we’ll be looking to bring them to you weekly.
I’m excited to continue growing The Notts Edit, and I hope you’ll all enjoy this addition to your inbox. For any queries on this, whether questions about the change or to discuss opportunities, please do email me at editor@thenottsedit.com.

News 🗞
🕯️ City of caves: Nottingham has reached a recorded milestone of 1,000 caves beneath its streets. The city sits on soft sandstone, a material easy to carve, which allowed generations to create underground spaces across centuries. Systematic recording began in the late 2000s, when known cave sites stood at around 425. Since then, the documented total has grown, and recent years have brought a faster rise, with dozens of new entries added annually through document research and field investigation. archeologymag.com
📺 Cloaks on: Anyone else glued to the screen when it comes to The Traitors? The celebrity version has announced its season two cast – and Nottingham’s own Bella Ramsey will be taking part. The Game of Thrones and The Last of Us actor will join the likes of Michael Sheen, Richard E. Grant, and James Blunt. The series is due to air later this year. bbc.co.uk
🍏 Save the tree: Campaigners have launched an appeal to try to save the mother tree of our county’s famous cooking apple. The original bramley apple tree, which grows in the garden of a cottage in Southwell, Nottinghamshire, is for sale, with the cottage put on the market by its owners, Nottingham Trent University. Rather than have the 220-year-old tree fall into private hands with no public access, campaigners are seeking to raise £250,000 to buy the property and turn it into a heritage centre. theguardian.com / crowdfunder.co.uk
🥃 Cheers to that: Welbeck Estate-based rum brand DropWorks Rum has been listed with luxury high-end store Fortnum & Mason. This will initially offer the DropWorks Rum Gift Set, Barrel Drop and the limited-edition Distiller’s Drop #001. “With our rum crafted and distilled in Britain using quality and natural ingredients, being listed by such a prestigious retailer is a huge achievement,” said Lewis Hayes, DropWorks Rum founder and master distiller. dropworks.co.uk
Scores on the Doors 🏆
🌳 Nottingham Forest
Nottingham Forest’s fine run of form continued with a 1-0 win over Aston Villa in the Europa League semi-final, followed by a 3-1 away win over Chelsea in the Premier League. Chris Wood’s penalty gave the Red the edge in the Europa League semi-final ahead of the away leg, while goals from Taiwo Awoniyi and Igor Jesus blew away Chelsea and lifted Forest to 42 points, needing just four more to guarantee safety.
🦌 Mansfield Town
Mansfield Town finished 10th in League One after a thrilling 5-4 home win over Cardiff. The result means that the Stags ended their season on a six-match unbeaten run, and can be proud of a year in which they also hosted Arsenal in the FA Cup fifth Round.
🐦 Notts County
Notts County missed out on automatic promotion following a 1-1 draw with Bristol Rovers. Results elsewhere meant that Notts’ result was irrelevant, and the Magpies will face rivals Chesterfield in the playoffs, with the first leg on Sunday.
🏏 Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club
Nottinghamshire moved to the top of the County Championship after a comfortable win over Leicestershire. Ben Slater scored 178, and Liam Patterson-White took 5-53 to wrap up a 10-wicket victory.
🏍️ Motorcycle racing
Jacksdale’s own Kyle Ryde won the opening three races of the British Superbike season at Oulton Park, starting his title defence in style. Ryde is bidding to become a three-time champion this year.
