What’s On 🗓️
Binks Yard Film Club 🍿
When: May 7-June 18
Where: Binks Yard, Nottingham
How much: £5pp
We love this outdoor dining spot — and we’re also big fans of its outdoor screen, which is the largest in the East Midlands. It’s showing a range of different films throughout this month, with family-friendly hits like Moana (May 28) and The Greatest Showman (June 4), as well as nostalgic favourites like Grease (May 7) and Dirty Dancing (May 21). These vary between afternoon and evening showings.
Do if: You’d love to soak in the sun with entertainment you know and love.
VE Day 80th Anniversary 🇬🇧
When: May 8
Where: Power House, Clipstone Headstocks, Mansfield
How much: £9.38pp
Take a trip back in time and learn about Nottinghamshire’s wartime role throughout the years. Start by finding out about the Raleigh cycle factory, then journey through to the WW1 display — Clipstone was the largest army camp during this war. After this, you’ll move to the WW2 display and then see the Cold War vehicle exhibits. Tours will take place on the hour every hour and sturdy footwear is advised.
Do if: You’d like to spend VE Day delving into the country’s war history.
VE Afternoon Tea 🇬🇧
When: May 8
Where: Norwood Park, Southwell
How much: £15pp adult, £5pp child
Celebrate VE Day in style with this afternoon tea event filled with food and activities. This hall was occupied by The British Red Cross Society during the end of WW2 as a convalescent home for wounded servicemen, making it a very fitting spot for celebrations. The event runs from 2pm-6pm, with history talks from 2pm, birthday tea from 3pm, and songs with the Mansfield Male Voice Choir from 4pm.
Do if: You’d love to go all-out for VE Day.
Nottinghamshire County Show 🌳
When: May 10
Where: Newark Showground
How much: £19pp adult, child free (but adult ticket required)
Find out about Nottinghamshire’s rich rural scene during this day packed with competitions, food and drink, shops, and more. You’ll be able to see the best livestock from around the county compete for rosettes. Not a farmer? You could also enter the make, bake, and grow or floral arts competitions. In between all this, you can browse over 240 stalls.
Do if: You’d love to spend a day in the countryside.

Outdoor dining around Nottingham — 7 of the best spots for eating al fresco
When the sun is shining, there's nothing better than eating a delicious meal al fresco style — and there are plenty of places to do that around Nottingham.
The Anchor in Gunthorpe: “A riverside retreat with real feasts” — restaurant review
The Anchor in Gunthorpe is one of the newest and chicest pubs in the county, re-opening alongside Tom Browns after 16 years out of action. We reviewed its chic and classic pub fare.
Hot Property 🏡
Pairing up modernity and industrial moodiness beautifully, this five-bedroom home in Burton Joyce is a real gem. Even though it’s a dormer bungalow, it’s still ultra-spacious, with a sprawling open-plan kitchen, three bathrooms, and a large private garden at the back. We also adore its character features, including the parquet flooring, stained glass windows, and uniquely tiled fireplace. It’s marketed by Elite Homes and is listed at £685k. rightmove.co.uk

News 🗞
🍹 Cheers to that: New cocktail bar Loose Ends is opening up this Thursday (May 8). Its sister venue is 400 Rabbits, which is one of our favourite cocktail bars in Nottingham. It will be open 4pm-12am Thursday and Friday, Saturday 12pm-12am, and Sunday 12pm until late. The drinks look super delicious and we can’t wait to give them a try. @loose_ends
🌊 Making a splash: The Victoria Embankment paddling pool is set to re-open on the late-May bank holiday weekend, with a series of events from May 23-26. It shut in 2021 due to maintenance, but has undergone a £750k makeover with National Lottery funding, and will now include a completely refurbed pool, a splash zone, and new landscaping. We enjoyed the nostalgic pictures of it on this BBC piece. bbc.co.uk
Scores on the Doors
🌳 Nottingham Forest
Nottingham Forest travel to face Crystal Palace later today, needing a win to lift themselves back into the Premier League top five. The Reds fell to a disappointing 2-0 home defeat to Brentford on Thursday, with manager Nuno Espírito Santo saying that his team “need to be themselves again.”
🦌 Mansfield Town
Mansfield Town ended their season on a high with a 3-0 home win over Exeter. Stephen McLaughlin opened the scoring before Dom Dwyer doubled their lead in the 38th minute, and Ben Waine wrapped up the win late on. They finished their first season back in League One in 17th place.
🐦 Notts County
Notts County will face AFC Wimbledon in the play-off semi-finals on Saturday, after a 2-1 defeat to champions Doncaster on Sunday. Results elsewhere and a poor start to the game ended Notts’ automatic promotion hopes. While Alassana Jatta struck late to end the season with 19 goals, Stuart Maynard's side ended 6th in League Two with the play-offs to come.
🏏 Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club
The Blaze were in action at Trent Bridge on Sunday in the One Day cup, with Tammy Beaumont's 112 off 113 balls leading them to a seven-wicket win over Hampshire and taking them to the top of the table. Meanwhile, Nat Sciver-Brunt, who represents both the Blaze and Trent Rockets, will be the new England captain.
