Notts Going On: Restoring treasure and building bridges
Nottingham has already been busy this month, and it has only just got started...
It’s officially February, and boy did Nottingham start the month with a bang. We loved seeing the city illuminated for Light Night, with so many gorgeous and dazzling exhibitions. If you got down and took any snaps, do tag us in them @thenottsedit on Instagram. We took this shiny one of Green’s Windmill:
If you want to find out what else is popping off this month, check out our February events guide, which has plenty to do whether you’re lovestruck or not.
For the week in hand though, we’ve got you covered with news and tidbits that may come in handy.

🕰️ Antique and arts centre Hopkinson is part of three Conservation Areas in the city that have now been taken off Historic England’s Heritage at Risk register. We love having a potter and a coffee in here before or after heading on the train, so we’re pleased to see it’ll be around for a good while longer. This Facebook post from Historic England has loads of comments from locals with stories about the shop, which are fascinating.
🌉 Planning permission has been submitted for a new pedestrian and cycling bridge over the River Trent, reports My Nottingham News. The Waterside Bridge will be the first one over the Trent since Clifton Bridge over 60 years ago and will create links between Colwick Park on the north bank, and the Lady Bay and West Bridgford areas to the south. Grant funding has come from the Central Government through the Transforming Cities programme. It’s lovely to see a positive piece of news for the area’s redevelopment.
🔎 Looking for a fun Saturday night activity you can do with a date or with your mates? You can play detective at the National Justice Museum’s Cocktails and Crime night, where you can take part in a 1950s-style whodunnit. Celebrated writer Athene Olivier is launching her new novel, but things soon take a turn when a body is discovered. It’ll be up to you to solve the mystery. Tickets are £23.99pp and include a cocktail or mocktail on arrival, as well as access to the event itself, which starts at 8pm and finishes at 10pm.
🍕 It’s National Pizza Day on Friday, February 9, which sounds like the perfect excuse to grab a slice at one of our city’s amazing pizzerias. Some of our favourites include Pizzamisu which has an authentic atmosphere and Neapolitan pizzas, Slice ‘n’ Brew which has a casual setting and can make many pizzas veggie/vegan on request, and Rudy’s which is all about fresh, quality ingredients and has many exciting toppings. We visited Rudy’s when it opened, and were seriously impressed.
🏡 We’re off to get a lottery ticket after setting eyes on the beautiful Culloden House in Kings Clipstone on Rightmove, which is on sale for a cool £7.5m. Luxurious facilities include an indoor swimming pool, tennis court, stables, and even a cosy cabin with a hot tub. Along with this, it has 19 acres of ancient woodland to walk through. Oh, and it also boasts 13 bedroom suites — we’re bagsying the one with the pirate bed, to be honest.
⚽ Saturday saw the Nottinghamshire Derby take place, with League Two rivals Mansfield Town and Notts County playing each other. The game ended 1-0 to Mansfield, leaving the Stags second in the league and the Magpies seventh. Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest picked up a point away at Bournemouth, coming from behind to draw 1-1, courtesy of a curling effort from Callum Hudson-Odoi.
