Notts Going On — Winter walks and Torvill and Dean honours
Concerts and crafts, a charming home in Sherwood, hot destinations, and more...
Hello and welcome to Notts Going On – your weekly guide with events, property, news, and more.
I’m writing this underneath a heated blanket, as we’ve officially had our first snow of the year in Nottingham. I think it’s just the right amount, but goodness, is it cold! I’m going to head out in a bit and get some frosty snaps while it’s still settled. I hope you are all staying warm and having a calm week back, too.

Candlelight: Best of Bridgerton on Strings 🕯️
When: January 9
Where: Nottingham Contemporary
How much: From £32pp
Dearest reader – we’ve just heard from Lady Whistledown, and the most fabulous candlelight musical experience is happening this Friday. You’ll hear a range of different songs reimagined by a string quartet – think Taylor Swift’s Wildest Dreams, Robyn’s Dancing On My Own, and Pitbull’s Give Me Everything (it really does work!). The show starts at 6pm, so there’s plenty of time to do something after, too.
Do if: You can’t wait for the new season of Bridgerton to drop, and would love to listen to dreamy music from the show in the meantime.
The Jive Aces 🎶
When: January 9
Where: Peggy’s Skylight, Nottingham
How much: £20pp
One of the UK’s top jive and swing bands, The Jive Aces are known for their high-energy performances, as well as being the first live band to reach the final rounds of Britain’s Got Talent. They have sold out the Royal Albert Hall, and have nearly sold out Peggy’s Skylight, too. Tickets for the earlier show are all gone, but there are still seats available for the 9.15pm show – perfect for a post-dinner or drinks in town treat.
Do if: You’d like to feel uplifted after a week of getting back into things post-Christmas.
Introduction to Silver Art Clay Workshop 💍
When: January 10
Where: The Bead Shop, Nottingham
How much: £100pp
Learn how to make your own silver art clay jewellery during this day-long workshop. You’ll be taught all the basic techniques, such as moulding, firing, and finishing. By the end of the day, you’ll have a leaf pendant, a ring and a textured pendant or charms, which you can take away with you on the day. The workshop is suitable for beginners, and all materials and tools are provided.
Do if: You’d love to spend a day making something special in a cosy, mindful environment.
Just the Tonic Nottingham Special with Scott Bennett 😂
When: January 10
Where: Metronome, Nottingham
How much: £20.21pp
Award-winning Nottingham-based comedian Scott Bennett is about to embark on a huge nationwide tour – and he’s warming up at the Metronome. Scott has appeared on shows such as Live at the Apollo and The News Quiz. He’ll be joined by Daisy Earl and Darrell Martin, as well as a mystery guest middle act. Just the Tonic is known for its brilliantly curated comedy shows, which are on every Saturday.

Forest Bathing and Winter Tree Identification 🌲
When: January 11
Where: Rushcliffe Country Park
How much: £16.96pp, £13.70pp concessions
Spend a relaxing afternoon walking through the Rushcliffe Country Park, where you’ll be shown how to identify trees in winter. You’ll be shown how to spot clues such as their buds, bark, and overall shape, before you take part in a guided meditation session with elements from the walk. The whole experience will be finished off with a cup of freshly foraged, seasonal tea. This will all be guided by qualified forest therapy practitioner Poppy.
Do if: You’d like to spend a Sunday afternoon away from your phone and immersed in nature.

News 🗞
🏅 What an honour: Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean received a damehood and a knighthood in the New Year Honours list. Torvill and Dean won gold at the 1984 Winter Olympics, with perfect marks for their iconic performance set to Bolero. 12 other Nottinghamshire people also made the list, including James Whiting from the Skinny Food Co and Nigel Lymn Rose from A.W. Lymn Funeral Services. bbc.co.uk
🦌 Guess who’s back: The Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Wildlife Trusts have been progressing in their project to reintroduce elk to wetlands in Nottinghamshire. Elk were once a native species to the UK, but they became extinct about 3,000 years ago, predominantly due to hunting. Subject to a suitable risk assessment and further funding, the elk would be reintroduced firstly in a “very large wild-type enclosure” and in small numbers. bbc.co.uk
✈️ Fly away: Had enough of the cold and are already dreaming of summer sun? East Midlands Airport revealed that its most popular 2025 destinations were Palma de Mallorca, Tenerife, and Alicante. Palma was the hottest spot, and prices for 2026 start from £36, with the lowest prices being in March, according to Skyscanner. westbridgfordwire.com
