Nottingham books — 22 interesting reads to add to your bookshelf
With Nottingham being a city of literature and the county being full of inspiration, it’s no surprise that there are plenty of Nottingham books out there.
Travel ✈️
I went to the Nottingham Forest bar in Milan — this is what it’s actually like
I went to Milan for a few days on holiday, and while I was there I couldn’t resist going to the famous Nottingham Forest bar.
Food & Drink 🍽️
I dined in a cave at Bar Gigi in Nottingham — it was a unique and magical experience
There are so many different places to dine in Nottingham — but none of them are quite like the Cantine dell’Angelo wine cellar and caves at Bar Gigi.
Hot Property 🏡
Cosy and picturesque, this five-bedroom former farmhouse in Edwalton looks like a dreamy place to unwind and relax (perhaps with a book from our list above?). The house is filled with charm and period features, including dramatic wooden beams stretching across the ceiling and a kitchen with a brick-enclosed Aga. Some of the rooms might need a little TLC, but it is filled with potential. Plus, outside it has a spacious garden with an enormous tree. The guide price is from £795k and it’s being marketed by Frank Innes. rightmove.co.uk
News 🗞
⭐ Seal of approval: Piccalilli entered the Michelin Guide last week, with the renowned guide saying the “dishes show off recognisable flavour combinations executed with aplomb.” The restaurant also made The Good Food Guide’s top 100 restaurants a couple of weeks ago. The Martins Arms in Colston Bassett made the list as well this summer, with the guide saying “this fine rural inn has got a spring back in its step, while preserving some of the best elements from its historic past.” guide.michelin.com
⚽ Lasting legacy: A bronze statue of former Nottingham Forest, Birmingham City, and England forward Trevor Francis was unveiled at Birmingham City’s St Andrews stadium on Saturday. Trevor Francis was the first player in Britain to be bought for £1m when Brian Clough signed him to Forest in 1979. bbc.co.uk
🏳️🌈 Filled with Pride: Notts Pride celebrated having its biggest event yet, with a record 10,000 march attendees — 1,000 more than last year. The event took place on July 26, spanning Sneinton Market and Hockley, playing host to different stalls, and having live music and acts. Leigh Ellis, chair of Notts Pride, said: “It was incredibly special to see the spirit of togetherness across the whole city.” nottspride.co.uk
Scores on the Doors 🏆
🌳 Nottingham Forest
Forest completed the signing of Dan Ndoye from Bologna this week, with the Swiss international penning a five-year deal at the City Ground. It is believed that the initial payment is the highest that Forest have ever made for a player. The 24-year-old forward scored the winner in the Copa Italia final last season. In their fifth pre season fixture, Forest fell to a 1-0 defeat to Birmingham City
🦌 Mansfield Town
The 25/26 Football League season got underway over the weekend, with League One and Two fixtures back in action. Mansfield Town made a good start to their game at Burton Albio, but were made to rue missed chances in a 2-1 defeat. Baily Cargill scored the Stags goal.
🐦 Notts County
Martin Paterson’s Magpies earned a point away at Newport, with Jodi Jones scoring a penalty in a 1-1 draw. The game was delayed due to a stadium evacuation ahead of kick off, with a Notts County supporter airlifted to hospital — we wish them a speedy recovery.
🏏 Cricket
Nottinghamshire lost ground to Surrey in the County Championship with a draw against Somerset at Trent Bridge. Surrey now lead Notts by nine points with the two sides set to go head to head next month. Meanwhile, head coach Peter Moores has signed a three-year extension to his contract with the club.
