Boot & Shoe in Flintham — A cosy county escape

On a rainy, stormy evening, there was nothing more comforting than stepping into the Boot & Shoe pub in Flintham.
When inside, we were greeted with a warm and rustic interior, with flickering candles, warm sconces on the wall, exposed brickwork, and sumptuous seating. The pub is split into the pub area and the restaurant area, with big armchairs for drinks on one side and elegant dining chairs on the other.
After sitting down and perusing the drinks menu, we could see that you could definitely pop in for just a beverage, thanks to the extensive wine and beer list. The cocktail list is also impressive, with beverages such as the kine sangria, yuzu margarita, and espresso martini on the menu. We started our meal with the kine sangria, which was refreshing and sweet.
But, onto the main attraction — the food. The pub serves a mixture of small plates (from £6.50), large plates (from £16), and burgers (from £16), along with Sunday roasts (from £17). The prices are slightly on the higher end for pub food, so the expectation was certainly for big portions and flavours.
My partner Sam is a meat-eater and I’m a vegetarian, so we opted to have our own starters rather than sharing small plates. Sam began with the venison croquettes (£7.50). He said that while they could have had more sauce, they were rich and a sophisticated alternative to, say, chicken tenders or arancini.
Meanwhile, I had the mushroom pâté on Hambleton focaccia (£6.50). I’m usually an avid mushroom hater (surprisingly, for a vegetarian), but these were chopped up finely and had a wonderful umami flavour that was so moreish.
While I could have gone for another plate of pâté, I had a heritage pumpkin and goats cheese pie (£18) to look forward to. I am a big fan of pie, so I was incredibly excited to get into this — and it was the perfect hearty dish. The seeded hot-crust pastry complemented the sweet and earthy filling beautifully, while the roasted root veg tasted garden-fresh. Oh, and the mash — buttery and silky smooth.

Sam went for the freshly-delivered market fish (£23). While he confirmed this was deliciously light, he wondered if it could be made clearer what the ‘catch of the day’ was, either on a separate menu or by the waiters. He also wanted a few more potatoes — lots of the other mains we saw came out with bigger portions, such as the cheeseburger (£17) and the venison loin (£32). Plus, he wasn’t sure the tempura clams added much to the dish — however, they did look aesthetically-pleasing.
I will always finish with dessert, so I had to sample the sticky toffee pudding £6.50), which was soft, sweet, and lightly-salted, and came complete with clotted cream ice cream. I thought it could have been hotter around the outside, but it was still lovely to eat. We also both loved the idea of liquid desserts, including Sandeman fine ruby port (£6) and Lagavulin single malt whisky (£11), but we’d had our cocktails and drinks with dinner, so left these this time.
The pub is a 10-minute drive from Gunthorpe and Lowdham. Gunthorpe has lovely walks around the River Trent, while Lowdham has a fascinating signal box that’s often open for tours. And, incredibly, the pub is just a 30-minute drive from Nottingham city centre itself.
If you’re searching for a cosy county escape, the Boot and Shoe offers welcoming respite. Whether you’d love a snug drink by the fire or a warm, indulgent meal, you can certainly expect to leave feeling relaxed and satisfied.
